According to revised Power Development Program VII approved by the Prime Minister in March 2016, by 2030, coal thermal power accounts for 53.2% of energy produced.
To reduce ratio of coal thermal power is not simple since it is difficult to find alternative sources, especially when large and medium hydropower projects have been mostly harnessed, exploitation of natural gas source has also come to the limit and prospect of importing liquid natural gas will take place after 2025. Renewable energy can only be considered supplementary resources, but not replace coal-fired thermal power source.
Attached to environment protection
Nowadays, technology of coal thermal power production in Vietnam is modern, world-class. Particularly, steam parameters are of supercritical and ultra-supercritical technologies with high performance, large unit capacity and assurance of safety and reliability.
Workshop on coal-fired thermal power technology and environmental protection
High efficient electrostatic precipitator system (ESP, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), Low-NOx boiler technology, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for NOx control, etc. Every EVN’s coal-fired thermal power plants (TPP) are designed and constructed with industrial wastewater treatment system that meets national technical standards on environment.
Ash and slag from EVN’s coal-fired TPP is gathered, processed and transported to slag dump, avoid dispersal to surrounding environment. In particular, power plants in the North already signed contracts with companies consumed ash and slag. In the South, Vinh Tan 2 TPP signed a contract with Ever Green Investment Join Stock Company to use all ash and slag of the Plant in producing construction materials, adobe brick, etc. Duyen Hai 1 TPP also signed a purchase contract with 3 enterprises to supply about 1.62 million tons of ash and slag per year.
In order to reuse all the ash, slag and gypsum of these TPP, EVN petitioned the Ministry of Construction to consider directing the study, issued or allowed to apply a number of criteria, technical instruction for the TPP, in particular: technical requirements for ash, slag, plaster of the TPP used in production of building materials; technical guide in using dredge in grading civil construction, technology and technical infrastructure; use fly-ash instead of clay to produce clinker in the production of cement and concrete admixture.
Speaking at the seminar, Deputy Minister of Industry Hoang Quoc Vuong has confirmed the important role of coal thermal power in supplying sufficient power for economic and social development of the country. However, during the operation of coal thermal power plant, some environmental problems occur and need to be resolved. The Deputy Minister directed to improve technology of plants, increase operational efficiency, efficiently handle waste, effectively perform environmental protection. In particular, mechanisms and policies to turn waste of coal-fired TPP into resources, materials to serve a number of industries and fulfill the green growth.
