EVN learns from UK's experience in power system operation and wind power development

The delegation of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) led by Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh – Vice president of EVN, has just had a business trip to learn from the UK’s experience in power system operation and wind power development. The program is implemented on the basis of partial funding from the British Embassy in Vietnam.

The purpose of the business trip is to collect information, exchange, and learn experiences in power system operation when there are many renewable energy sources connected to the grid, especially offshore wind power.

In the United Kingdom, the delegation worked with agencies of the British Government and Businesses, including the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS); Department for International Trade (DIT); National Grid Corporation (National Grid), The power system dispatching centers; The the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM); Companies of BP, Crown Estate, Carbon Trust and a number of supply chain companies with products and services for offshore wind power development.

The UK is the world leader in offshore wind power (overtaking Denmark at the end of 2008). In the UK, there are 14 regions, with 8 dispatching centers to implement dispatching throughout the power system. Currently, the total power output of the whole system is 334.2 billion kWh, the installed capacity is 76.6GW. With offshore wind power, the currently installed capacity is 13.8GW, which is expected to grow to 50GW by 2030 and 125GW by 2050. UK offshore wind power price is around 37 GBP/MWh (equivalent to about 1,100 VND/kWh).

In recent years, National Grid has focused on developing and applying new technologies to respond to climate change and sustainability challenges. The wind power industry plays a key role in reducing the carbon footprint of the Power sector in the UK and around the world. At companies in the supply chain of products and services to develop offshore wind power, the delegation is shared practical experiences, activities, initiatives, technologies, and applied strategies to support the development of offshore wind power.

At COP26, Vietnam has committed to achieving net zero emissions (Net Zero) by 2050. To achieve this commitment, the power sector as well as other sectors are striving to contribute to achieving the Government commitment target.

It is hoped that in the coming time, Vietnam's electricity industry will continue to receive support from the British Embassy for British experts to come to Vietnam to conduct training, share practical experience in power system operation and especially offshore wind power development, helping EVN to invest and develop a modern power grid, operate power grid safely and efficiently and reduce emissions, thereby contributing to achieving the goals committed by the Government at the COP26 Conference.
