EVN to design transmission line for snow regions

This was one of the main topics of the meeting on designing transmission lines under the impact of climate change between functional departments of EVN and related units. The meeting was on 19th July, 2017, chaired by Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh – Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

The discussion on transmission line designs in the afternoon of 19th July

During the meeting, the representative of Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company No.1 (PECC I) reported on the impact of the climate and environment change on the operation of grids in Viet Nam and proposed relating solutions. They also compiled experiences of other countries in designing transmission lines in snow and ice conditions for references.

At the beginning of 2016, snow already appeared in Northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam, causing breaking of Son La - Hoa Binh and Son La - Nho Quan 500kV lines. There were 8 broken 35kV lines, 5 broken cross-bars and 35 substations stopped operation etc…

At the meeting, EVN Deputy General Director Nguyen Tai Anh requested the units to research and to learn from the international experience to properly apply to Vietnam.

As the country is developing drastically, the demand for safe, stable and high-quality supply of electricity is increasing. Thus, how to deal with  snow and ice and pollution to enhance the reliability of power supply is necessary, especially in the context of climate change becoming more and more unexpected.
