On the morning of July 1, at Bac Ai Tay Commune, Khanh Hoa Province, EVN Vice President Pham Hong Phuong led a working delegation to inspect the construction progress for the second quarter of 2026 of the Bac Ai Pumped Storage Hydropower Project - the first pumped storage hydropower project in Vietnam.

The delegation also included Mr. Tran Phu Cuong, EVN Controller, representatives from EVN's specialized departments, Power Project Management Board No. 3 (EVNPMB3), supervising consultants, and project contractors.

Several underground works received particular attention during the site inspection, including the VH3A tunnel (serving the construction and operation of the water conveyance tunnel and the upper reservoir), the power cable and ventilation tunnel, and the construction, operation and ventilation tunnel. Progress at the VH3A tunnel face has encountered difficulties due to a geological fault zone, resulting in total excavation progress for the second quarter reaching only about 17% of the quarterly target. Construction activities are proceeding at a fast pace across the project site, with a constant flow of vehicles entering and exiting the tunnels. Photo: Entrance to power cable and ventilation tunnel.

The contractor has fully prepared tunnel drilling equipment, as well as spare parts and components, ensuring that replacements can be made whenever necessary. Photo: Imported aluminum-alloy drill rod (left) and engineering diamond drill bit (right).

The aggregate crushing and screening plant (left), with a capacity of 250 tonnes per hour, and the concrete batching plant (right), with a capacity of 60 cubic metres per hour, utilize soil and rock excavated from the tunnels. This approach helps reduce both construction costs and project implementation time.

The project's water supply system consists of pipelines conveying water from Song Cai Reservoir to the construction areas and from mountain streams to the concrete batching plant, providing water for construction activities throughout the site.

Following the site inspection, the EVN delegation held the Q2 review meeting for the Bac Ai Pumped Storage Hydropower Project with Power Project Management Board No. 3 (EVNPMB3), the supervising consultants, and the contractor consortium at the project management office. More information about the meeting will be published on the EVN website in subsequent updates.
