Operational situation in April 2024 and objectives and tasks in May 2024
In April 2024, when power demand increased very high due to the continued economic recovery, and at the same time, widespread intense heat occurred in all three regions, Vietnam Electricity still ensured a safe and continuous power supply, serving socio-economic development and meeting the people's daily needs, especially during the holiday season of April 30 –May 1.
Maximum capacity and daily power consumption on a national scale have increased with numbers reaching new records with a maximum capacity of up to 47,670 MW (27 April 2024) and the highest daily power consumption reached 993 million kWh (26 April 2024). EVN has flexibly operated power sources, including maximum mobilization of coal and gas thermal power plants, combined with increasing maximum transmission from the Central to the North region and mobilizing appropriate hydropower plants according to the hydrological situation, water returns to the reservoir to retain water to ensure power supply until the end of the 2024 dry season.
In April, power production of the whole system reached 26.82 billion kWh, an increase of 14.1% over the same period in 2023. Accumulated in the first 4 months of 2024, the power production of the whole system reached 96.16 billion kWh, an increase of 12.4% over the same period in 2023. Output and mobilization proportion of all types of power sources in the whole system in 4 months are as follows:
+ Hydropower: 14.41 billion kWh, accounting for 15%.
+ Coal thermal power: reached 56.89 billion kWh, accounting for 59.2%.
+ Gas turbines: 8.52 billion kWh, accounting for 8.9%.
+ Renewable energy: 14.55 billion kWh, accounting for 15.1% (of which solar power reached 9.26 billion kWh, wind power reached 4.78 billion kWh).
+ Imported electricity: 1.56 billion kWh, accounting for 1.6%.
Transmission power output in April 2024 reached 22.5 billion kWh. Accumulated in the first 4 months of 2024, transmission power output reached 76.9 billion kWh, an increase of 13.52% over the same period in 2023.
Construction investment: In April 2024, EVN and its units made great efforts to implement investment in power source and grid projects according to the yearly plan targets. EVN leaders have regularly inspected construction sites, urged construction progress, and supply of materials and equipment for key power projects, in which the Quang Trach-Pho Noi 500kV line, circuit 3 has been completed foundation casting of 1005/1177 positions; The expanded Ialy Hydropower Plant project is closely following the target of generating 2 power units by the end of 2024, etc. In the first 4 months of 2024, EVN and its units have started 34 works and completed energizing and putting into operation 36 power grid works from 110kV to 500kV, in which several important projects were completed in April such as Pho Cao 220kV substation and connection, the second 220kV transformer of Thai Thuy substation, etc.
In addition, to proactively prepare many solutions for power supply in 2024, EVN has updated the calculation of the Power Supply and System Operation Plan in 2024 and the Power Supply Plan for peak dry season months (April, May, June, July) of 2024 and has been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, etc.
Some working tasks of EVN in May 2024
It is forecast that in May 2024, power demand will continue to increase with the daily power consumption of the whole system expected at 913.6 million kWh/day, an increase of 12.24% over the same period, maximum capacity can be up to 49,000MW, in the North alone it can be up to 24,500MW.
To be proactive in ensuring power supply for the National power system, especially in the Northern region during the peak months of the dry season in 2024, EVN has directed all units to strictly implement Circular No. 38/CD-TTg dated 15 April 2024 and directions of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the target of ensuring stable, safe and reliable operation of the power system. In which:
- Continue to properly mobilize power sources, hydropower plants operate flexibly according to incoming water with the target of retaining water to ensure power supply until the end of the dry season. Closely monitor meteorological and hydrological developments, fuel situation, generator set availability, and load growth to promptly update and adjust appropriate operating methods.
- Power Corporations/Power Companies weekly monitor production and business situations, prepare power supply scenarios and continue to implement Directive No. 20 on propagandizing and implementing electricity saving.
- Power Generation Corporations and power plants continue to coordinate closely with PVN, TKV, Dong Bac Coal Corporation, and Investors of other power sources to ensure sufficient fuel supply for power production according to the system demand.
- The National Power Transmission Corporation and Power Corporations proactively detect, fix, and prevent power grid incidents, improve reliability, and reduce power loss; Strengthen supervision and compliance with operational discipline.
Regarding construction investment: In May 2024, EVN continues to urge units to concentrate forces at construction sites and accelerate the construction progress of key power source and grid projects. In which:
- Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project: Receiving and installing electromechanical and hydromechanical equipment in sync with the plant construction progress, ensuring the power generation target in 2024.
- Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant Project: Completing the 3rd phase technical design according to appraisal opinions to submit to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
- Completing capital arrangement procedures for the expanded Tri An Hydropower project and Bac Ai Pumped Storage Hydropower project to start construction soon.
- Concentrating all resources to construct the Quang Trach - Pho Noi 500 kV line circuit 3, continuing to work with localities on land clearance work to hand over the remaining spans. Despite focusing and making great efforts to strive for completion according to the assigned schedule, ensuring construction safety on the construction site must still be a top priority.
- Urgently completing power grid works to increase electricity imports from Laos such as: Striving to complete energizing the Nam Sum - Nong Cong 220kV line project; Energizing phase 1 of Dak Ooc 220kV switching station, etc.
To join hands and contribute to ensuring power supply during the hot summer of 2024, EVN hopes to continue to receive the sharing and active coordination of people and electricity customers through thorough and economical use of electricity during peak lunch hours (from 11:00 to 15:00), peak evening hours (from 19:00 to 23:00). In particular, people and electricity customers pay special attention to the reasonable use of air conditioning, only turn on the air conditioner when necessary, set the temperature at 26-27 degrees or higher; at the same time, pay attention not to use many high-capacity electrical devices during peak hours. Thoroughly using electricity to save electricity also minimizes the risk of electrical incidents and limits high electricity bills./.
