Electricity bills significantly reduce
According to calculations, with a 1kWp rooftop solar system, customers can generate an average of 3.5–4.5kWh per day. A system with a capacity of 5kWp can generate over 150kWh per month, equivalent to the average electricity consumption of a household in Hanoi.
According to the Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI), although the city does not have as many sunshine hours on average as the Central or Southern provinces, with over 1,500–1,700 hours of sunshine per year, it still has great potential for developing rooftop solar power, particularly in new urban areas, industrial facilities, and locations with favorable installation conditions. Making use of existing rooftops to invest in renewable energy systems not only helps reduce electricity bills but also relieves pressure on the power grid, especially during peak hours on hot sunny days.
On a larger scale, according to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), as of June 30, 2025, 8,664 customers in 17 Northern provinces and cities had installed rooftop solar systems with a total capacity of 577.1MWp. In June 2025 alone, despite unfavorable weather, the output fed into the grid from these systems was still estimated at 52.7 million kWh. Cumulatively, in the first six months of the year, rooftop solar generation reached over 226 million kWh. For the full year of 2025, EVNNPC expects to purchase about 530 million kWh of rooftop solar power, at a cost of nearly VND 1,005 billion.

Rooftop solar power development as part of Hanoi’s green urban development strategy
Towards a green and smart city
The development of rooftop solar power is not only a trend for personal energy savings but also an integral part of Hanoi’s green urban development strategy. Beyond reducing monthly electricity costs, rooftop solar helps cut CO₂ emissions into the environment. It is estimated that 1kWh of solar power can reduce approximately 0.7kg of CO₂ emissions compared to electricity generated from fossil fuels. If this model is widely adopted, its potential contribution to Hanoi’s carbon reduction goals would be tremendous.
To support customers in adopting and implementing rooftop solar, the Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) has announced that it is providing comprehensive assistance, from technical consulting and legal support to operational and payment procedures. With modern infrastructure, strong digital systems, and an experienced team of engineers, EVNHANOI is ready to act as a reliable intermediary between renewable energy producers and electricity consumers in Hanoi.
The Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has also issued multiple guidelines and instructions to support local power companies in promoting this model. The Corporation further calls for cooperation from local authorities, departments, and community organizations to encourage households and businesses to install rooftop solar systems.
