On the morning of October 2, in Thac Ba Commune, Lao Cai Province, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company held a ceremony to mark the 55th anniversary of its Traditional Day (October 5, 1971 – October 5, 2026).
On October 5, 1971, Thac Ba Hydropower Plant was officially inaugurated, with its first generating unit put into operation and connected to the national power grid. The plant was the first hydropower project built in northern Vietnam during the country’s period of socialist construction, with support from the Soviet Union.

In 2005, the plant was transformed into Thac Ba Hydropower Company. In 2006, it began operating under the joint-stock company model, with TBC shares listed on the stock market. Following equitization, the Company gradually modernized its equipment and reformed its corporate governance. In particular, the major overhaul and upgrade of generating units during the 2023–2025 period helped improve reliability and efficiency while extending the lifespan of the facility.
The Company has also expanded its investments, holding a 50.94% stake in Muong Hum Hydropower Joint Stock Company and 49% of the charter capital of Thac Ba 2 Hydropower Investment Joint Stock Company. In April 2025, the 18.9MW Thac Ba 2 Hydropower Plant officially began commercial power generation.
By 2025, Thac Ba Hydropower Plant had reached a cumulative electricity output of 20 billion kWh. From 2016 to the present, the Company has generated an average of 376.3 million kWh per year and contributed more than VND 100 billion annually to the State budget.
In addition to power generation, the plant is responsible for reservoir regulation, water supply and flood prevention and control for downstream areas.
Over the years, the Company and generations of its employees have received numerous prestigious honors, including the title of Hero of the People’s Armed Forces, the Third-Class Independence Order, and the First-, Second- and Third-Class Labor Orders.
