EVN’s General Director Tran Dinh Nhan worked with the Director of the World Bank in Vietnam

On 11 February 2022, in Hanoi, General Director of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) Tran Dinh Nhan had a meeting with Ms. Carolyn Turk - Director of the World Bank (WB) in Vietnam and Mr. Gareth Ward – British Ambassador to Vietnam on strengthening cooperation in energy development.

At the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation to promote the energy transition in Vietnam; funding for EVN to implement energy projects and other technical assistance, etc.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – President and CEO of EVN acknowledged and highly appreciated the WB's support for EVN in recent years.

EVN’s President and CEO Tran Dinh Nhan stated that EVN will strictly follow the direction of the Government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade on energy transition, in order to achieve the target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to the Government's commitment in COP-26.

The leader of EVN kindly requested the WB to support and advise EVN in developing EVN’s energy transition strategy; support studies on and finance wind power projects in the Northern region.

EVN proposed that the WB should extend further technical assistance with regards to the formulation of a mechanism to promote and complete the electricity market for the development of energy storage systems, auxiliary services applied for pumped storage hydropower plants; operating the power system effectively in the context of increasing proportions of wind power, solar power, and LNG power plants; interconnecting ASEAN power grids. At the same time, EVN suggested that the WB should expand cooperation on medium-sized projects with each power corporation in the period 2025 - 2030; projects within the framework of the energy transition program of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Since 1995, with the financial support of the World Bank, EVN has completed 12 programs and projects with a total loan value of about USD 3.92 billion. In addition to investment projects, the World Bank has been supporting EVN in technical assistance projects such as: supporting the second phase of the gender equality plan; studying the development of pumped storage hydropower plant and hydropower plant extension, etc.
