Ninh Binh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company: EPLUS catalyst enables cleaner electricity generation

With the aim of improving fuel efficiency and reducing gas emissions of the coal-fired power plant, Ninh Binh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (CPL) has tested using EPLUS catalyst in burning coal in boiler furnaces at 4 power units of Ninh Binh Thermal Power Plant.

EPLUS catalyst is a new technology product, using nano Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) as catalyst support in liquid organic solvent.

The EPLUS catalytic solution is then transformed into the gas phase and transmitted as oxygen supplying wind into boiler furnaces.

The catalyst meets coal at the head of burner nozzle, the light and the temperature of the furnace flame activate chemical reactions, producing a series of oxygen enriching reactions. The combustion reaction thus occurs faster, the combustion point decreases and the coal burns off with shorter time, increasing the furnace heat, increasing the amount of oxygen making the coal burn off better.

At the same time, with oxygen enrichment in the furnace, nano TiO2 catalytic optical component also works to reduce SOx, NOx which are generated during coal burning in the furnace, helping reduce toxic gas emissions into the environment.

With the efficiency of EPLUS catalyst, Vietnam Environment Industry Association has cooperated with Ninh Binh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company, GESTECK Vietnam Energy Joint Stock Company in testing EPLUS at 4 boilers with capacity of 4 x 130T/h of Ninh Binh Thermal Power Plant.

Through the experimental burning process, Ninh Binh Thermal Power Plant has reduced the carbon content in fly ash and slag by about 1 - 2%. In particular, the performance of 4 boilers can increase by more than 1%.

Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang - Director of the Thermal Power and Nuclear Power Consulting Center (Institute of Energy) said: To increase efficiency and reduce polluted gas emissions of coal-fired thermal power plants is not easy. Normally, to achieve high efficiency, investments must be made for technological innovation, upgrading boiler, turbine, smoke circulation, waste gas recovery, installation of equipment to monitor fuel consumption, etc. however these investments are surely much more costly than using catalysts.

Vietnam is in the process of industrializing the country towards sustainable development and green growth. Therefore, the sustainable development of industries related to coal mining, processing and consumption is an inevitable requirement. Combustion additives are now considered as optimal and necessary solutions to save energy, reduce the amount of coal consumption, reduce gas emissions at coal-fired power plants, and improve the quality of ash and slag to be useful materials for cement and construction materials industry.

The use of EPLUS in boilers alters the combustion environment of fuel, minimizes corrosion caused by slags, cleans the boiler, reduces coal consumption, reduces emissions, protects the environment and reduces generation costs thanks to fuel savings.
