Overview of national power sources in 2023

1. Regarding power source structure

By the end of 2023, the total power source capacity (commercial operation accepted) of the entire system reached about 80,555MW, an increase of ~2,800MW compared to that of 2022, of which the total capacity of wind and solar power is 21,664MW, accounting for 27%, coal-fired thermal power is 26,757MW, accounting for 33.2%; hydropower (including small hydropower) is 22,872MW, accounting for 28.4%. The scale of Vietnam's power system ranks first in the ASEAN region in terms of power source capacity.

2. Regarding power generation

- The total power generation and import output of the entire system in 2023 is 280.6 billion kWh, an increase of 4.56% compared to that of 2022.

- The maximum load capacity of the entire system (Pmax) in 2023 is 46,348MW, an increase of 2.01% compared to that of 2022.

- Power generation and purchase of EVN in 2023 is estimated at 271.1 billion kWh, an increase of 3.45% compared to that of 2022 (of which: power generation of power plants under the parent company - EVN accounts for ~14.7%, power plants under GENCOs account for ~27.8%, and purchases from external sources account for 57.4%).

3. Regarding fuel supply for power generation

- Regarding coal supply for power generation: Basically, Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation meet the progress and volume according to the signed agreement. The total coal volume supplied by Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation to EVN's thermal power plants in 2023 is estimated at 24.08 million tons, equal to 95.44% of the agreement’s volume.

- Regarding gas supply and consumption: In 2023, the amount of consumed gas is lower than planned, of which: Southeast Gas: 4.07 billion m3, equal to 94.21% of the annual plan; Southwest Gas: 1.01 billion m3, equal to 77.69% of the annual plan.

- To ensure fuel supply for power generation in the coming years, EVN, Vinacomin, and Dong Bac Corporation have signed a Long-term Coal Supply Cooperation Agreement for EVN's thermal power plants, according to which Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation will be responsible for supplying all coal to the thermal power plants. At the same time, EVN is negotiating with PVN/PVGas to sign a framework agreement on gas supply to EVN and EVNGENCO3’s power plants and complete related contracts (GSA, PPA) for LNG supplementation so that, if necessary, LNG fuel can be immediately mobilized to supply sufficient gas for power generation.
