Report on “Offshore Wind Supply Chain for Vietnam’s Rapid Growth Scenario” announced

The Norwegian Embassy has just announced and presented the report on “Offshore Wind Power Supply Chain for Vietnam’s Rapid Growth Scenario”. The report assesses Vietnam’s offshore wind power development potential and proposes steps to build a complete and effective supply chain.

According to the report: With high wind speeds, favorable seabed conditions, and existing onshore and nearshore wind power infrastructure, Vietnam is considered a promising market.

The report also points out positive signals when international markets start to order to buy components in offshore wind power structures from Vietnam.

The main results of the Report point out some noteworthy points such as:

1. Vietnam has significant potential in localizing key components of offshore wind power projects, especially base fabrication, nacelle assembly, and wind tower supply.

2. The need to upgrade the existing port system in both the North and the South to meet the logistics needs of the offshore wind industry.

3. Domestic suppliers, especially those in the oil and gas industry, have shown strong interest and plans to participate in the offshore wind market.

4. The offshore wind industry can create tens of thousands of new jobs, especially in the South.

The report makes a number of strategic recommendations, including:

- Improving the policy and institutional framework for offshore wind.

- Strategic investment in port infrastructure.

- Scaling up the production by suppliers.

- Developing a clear project portfolio.

- Co-operating with universities to develop skills.

- Strengthening international cooperation.

- Establishing two inter-regional renewable energy centers in the North and the South, serving as production, research, and green industrial parks.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Norwegian Ambassador said: The report provides an overview of the potential and challenges of Vietnam's offshore wind power industry, and proposes important solutions and recommendations to develop the domestic supply chain, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam's energy industry.

At the end of the ceremony, both sides recognized that the Report had provided practical and professional recommendations from Norway - a country with experience in offshore wind power development, through which Vietnam can effectively exploit the potential of offshore wind power, contributing to ensuring national energy security, creating new jobs and promoting sustainable economic growth.
