Mission " Electricity is one step ahead"
Entering the 21st century, the Vietnam Power Industry has entered a new page of history with expanded opportunities for cooperation and investment in the p sector.
It can be said that this is a period of strong development of the Vietnam electricity system in both breadth and depth, which is an important premise in ensuring electricity supply for socio-economic development and people's lives with the demand for commercial electricity growing at an average of over 11%/year in the period 2001-2024, contributing to maintaining our country's economic growth rate at a high level for many consecutive years.
Many large-scale power projects have been put into operation such as Son La Hydropower Plant (HPP) with a total capacity of 2,400MW - the largest in Southeast Asia, followed by HPPs Lai Chau, Huoi Quang, Ban Chat, Tuyen Quang, etc. Vietnam has also built large thermal power centers such as Phu My, Vinh Tan, Duyen Hai, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, etc. In addition, many IPP, and BOT power plants of other domestic and foreign enterprises have been built.

In addition, renewable energy sources (wind power, solar power, biomass power, etc,) have developed rapidly in the past 5 years. These are clean, environmentally friendly energy sources, that contribute to ensuring national energy security, associated with implementing environmental protection policies, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote circular economy and sustainable development.
By the end of 2024, the total power capacity nationwide is expected to be about 82,400MW, an increase of 14 times compared to 2000 (6,170MW) and 3 times compared to 2010 (20,600MW), ranking first in the ASEAN region.
The power grid infrastructure has been invested in and developed synchronously, reaching all regions of the country. At the same time, the Vietnamese power system is connected to the grid to exchange electricity with countries in the area. The 500kV power system, the “backbone” of Vietnam’s power system, has been supplemented with circuits-2 and circuits-3. The 500-220kV power grid in key economic regions in the North and South is connected in a loop circuit to ensure a safe and reliable power supply.
EVN and its units focus on investing in power supply in rural, mountainous, and island areas. To date, the number of communes nationwide connected to the national grid has reached 100% and the number of households using electricity has reached 99.83%, of which the number of rural households connected to the national grid has reached 99.74%. Vietnam Electricity has successfully completed the task of rural electrification, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, improving material and spiritual life; contributing to the implementation of social justice and security, strengthening the great national unity block, maintaining political security and social order and safety, political stability, maintaining national defense and security, protecting the sovereignty of the territory and islands of the Fatherland. EVN has undertaken to supply electricity to 11/12 island districts, islands with strategic locations such as Phu Quoc, Co To, Ly Son, Kien Hai, Lai Son, Tien Hai, etc, are all supplied with national power grid by submarine cables.
In parallel with implementing the political task of ensuring electricity supply and investing in developing electricity infrastructure, the Power sector has rapidly implemented the restructuring process, gradually converting operations to a market mechanism, creating healthy competition in electricity generation. At the same time, EVN and its member units focus on implementing solutions to improve corporate governance capacity, training, developing high-quality human resources, enhancing the application of achievements of the 4.0 industrial revolution, and implementing comprehensive digital transformation in EVN's fields of operation. Automation and digital control technology are widely applied in the construction and operation of power systems, power markets, remote control centers, and unmanned substations for 100% of 110kV substations and 82% of 220kV substations.
EVN's business and customer service activities have undergone many fundamental and comprehensive innovations, constantly improving service quality. EVN's online electricity services have reached level 4. They have been connected to national digital platforms of ministries, branches, and localities, increasing transparency and creating all customer conveniences.
Confidently entering era of national growth
President and CEO of Vietnam Electricity Nguyen Anh Tuan also informed the veterans and retired cadres of the Power sector about the main results achieved in 2024.
In particular, EVN completed the construction of the Quang Trach - Pho Noi 500kV circuit-3 transmission line in a record short time after only 6 months of construction. The investment and construction of power projects have many positive changes, the value of investment capital disbursement ahead of the plan. EVN and its units have made great efforts to practice saving and reduce costs. The production and business results in 2024 are profitable, etc.
