The project utilizes the same catchment and reservoir of existing powerhouse, thus investment cost was significantly saved.

Components of the project includes: approach canal, intake, saddle dam, underground penstock, powerhouse, tailrace canal, and one bay at switchyard.

After completion, the Thac Mo Expansion will add 75MW into the existing 150MW installed capacity. A total capacity of 225MW of Thac Mo HPP operated in peak load period will be an important power supply to help peak load cover so that generating units those burn DO oil need not to be mobilized for the Southern region. In the meantime it will contribute for securing of power supply and economical operating of the system, and will maximum utilize otherwise excess water release during flood season.
