EVNHANOI: Capital’s power grid is becoming smarter

In recent years, Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) has strongly implemented digital transformation in the management and operation of the power system, with the target of building a "Smart Grid", improving service quality for more than 2.8 million electricity customers in the capital.

To enhance the monitoring and operation capabilities of the power system, EVNHANOI has commissioned and put into operation systems such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), DAS (Distribution Automation System), and OMS (Outage Management System). These technologies enable real-time monitoring and operation of the grid through data collected and processed from more than 1,500 automatic switching devices (Reclosers) on the medium-voltage grid.

This is the core technology infrastructure - playing the role of "backbone" in the smart grid operation model. Through this system, dispatchers can make timely and accurate operational decisions, helping to ensure the stable, safe, and efficient operation of the power system.

EVNHANOI equipped Recloser systems (automatic switching devices) integrated with sensors and smart technologies.

Proactive and intelligent operation through technology applications helps minimize fault handling time, narrow the outage area, and accelerate power restoration for residents. This is a key factor in improving the reliability of power supply in large urban areas such as Hanoi.

Along with the modernization of the power grid, EVNHANOI has completed the deployment of remote electronic meters across the area, replacing 100% of traditional meters by the end of 2021. This is not just a change in equipment, but an important step forward in collecting, managing, and using electricity data. Unlike mechanical meters - which require staff to go to each household to record the index every month - electronic meters are capable of transmitting data remotely to the operating system periodically, and completely automatically, helping to eliminate errors in the process of recording indexes. At the same time, people can proactively monitor their daily electricity consumption, look up electricity bills, and their electricity usage history via the EVNHANOI application (App).

Technology enables power companies to ensure full transparency in electricity usage process for residents.

EVNHANOI has integrated digital technology platforms such as GIS (power grid digital mapping system), CMIS (customer information management system), and PMIS (technical and operational management system) into a centralized operating system. Synchronously connecting these platforms helps EVNHANOI grasp the status of the power grid across the city, effectively manage customer information, and plan maintenance and repair more accurately. At the same time, customer care has also been improved, as the system processes information more quickly and accurately.
