This is a pilot project for installing battery storage systems (BESS) at 110kV substations in Hanoi, implemented by EVNHANOI at five 110kV substations: Bac Thang Long, Quang Minh, Sai Dong 2, Phung Xa, and Thanh Oai. Each BESS system has a capacity of 10MW/20MWh and is integrated into the distribution grid to support operation, load regulation, and enhance the flexibility of the power system.

The final system was successfully energized at the  Bac Thang Long 110kV Substation on July 5th. The remaining systems had been energized and put into operation earlier.

The completion of the installation and energization of all five BESS systems marks a significant step in the application of energy storage technology on Hanoi's power grid. These systems are capable of storing and re-releasing power when needed, contributing to grid operation during peak load hours, increasing regulation capacity, and improving the reliability of power supply.

Given the continued increase in electricity demand in the capital, especially during hot weather, the commissioning of the BESS system is of practical significance for load management and ensuring a safe and stable power supply. Energy storage technology also provides an additional technical tool for the power sector to be more proactive in system operation, especially as the proportion of renewable energy sources, distributed power sources, and electricity demand fluctuates increasingly depending on the time of day.

The project also serves as an important foundation for EVNHANOI to continue researching and evaluating the operational efficiency of energy storage systems in practice, supporting the development of smart grids, modernizing power infrastructure, and meeting the requirements of energy transition.
