Application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) into operation management of transmission line

On 16th April 2019, Mr. Dang Phan Tuong - Member Council’s Chairman of National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) conducted practical inspection on 500kV Da Nang - Thanh My transmission line (managed by Power Transmission Company No. 2) for the application of UAV in operation management of power transmission systems.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Phong - Director of Power Transmission Company No. 2 (PTC2), in order to implement the task assigned by the Corporation, the unit ordered to buy UAV of Altura Zenith ATX 8 manufactured by Aerialtronics (Netherlands).

Right after taking over the vehicle as well as technology transfer, PTC2 implemented periodic inspection of transmission line by this one on all sections of 220kV and 500kV transmission lines under its management.

PTC 2 applying UAV for its operation management of transmission line

The advantages in application of UAV include: Quick and clear check for all equipment and accessories overhead; reducing high climb of workers; limiting manual movement to each location, particularly those located on high hills and along safety corridors. However, due to weather and geographic conditions, the video signal has shown worse phenomenon with a distance from 500 to 600m or more. Therefore, PTC2 has been working with the vehicle supplier to overcome and handle it for completion.

Through actual inspection, Mr. Dang Phan Tuong - EVNNPT’s Chairman of Member Council requested the unit to prepare detailed reports to consider and conclude the synchronous implementation of using UAV in operation management of transmission power grid. Additionally, the unit was also required to coordinate with the supplier to supplement necessary devices, develop a standard flying route, standardize flying option for each transmission line to ensure safety for aerial vehicle and particularly the safety and continuity for on-operating power grid.
