Capacity building on corporate adaptation to energy transition

This was the topic of the workshop co-hosted by the French Development Agency (AFD), Électricité de France S.A. (EDF), and Vietnam Electricity (EVN). The workshop in the hybrid format took place over 2 days on April 2 and 3.

Attending the workshop were Mr. Olivier Brochet - French Ambassador to Vietnam; Mr. Hugo Pierrel - Deputy Director of the French Development Agency in Vietnam; Mr. Karim Bregui - General Director of EDF Vietnam; Mr. Philippe Lienhart - EDF expert, Director of the technical assistance project to support EVN’s energy transition, and other experts from AFD and EDF.

On Vietnam Electricity's side were Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh and representatives from EVN’s professional departments.

Workshop "Capacity building on corporate adaptation to energy transition"

Speaking at the workshop, EVN’s Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh stated that the Vietnamese Government has made a strong commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 at COP26. This goal poses enormous challenges for Vietnam's energy industry, especially the electricity industry, while ensuring energy security, stably supplying electricity to serve socio-economic development and realizing the CO2 emission reduction commitments at reasonable and affordable electricity prices.

Implementing the Government's commitments, EVN has proactively worked with partners to seek support in studying and building an energy transition roadmap in accordance with the National Power Development Plan No.8, promoting clean energy, renewable energy development, and reducing emissions towards the Government's goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

EVN’s Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh informs about EVN's orientations in energy transition process in Vietnam

The EVN leader emphasized that currently, the energy transition in the electricity sector has been confronting numerous difficulties and challenges. Vietnam in general and EVN in particular require great support from experienced international organizations in this area. EVN wishes to learn from many valuable experiences and lessons of EDF in the energy transition process. At the same time, EVN will share information about Vietnam's electricity system and clean energy development.

Mr. Olivier Brochet - French Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated EVN's orientations in the energy transition process towards net zero emissions. Over the past 50 years, Vietnam and France have jointly developed a friendly relationship in many fields, including energy. With acquired experience, through EDF, France pledges to support Vietnam in overcoming difficulties and challenges in the energy transition process and develop a green economy.

French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet speak at workshop

At the workshop, experts and delegates discussed and analyzed challenges and development trends of the energy market under the impact of the energy transition; At the same time, sharing experiences and practical examples of changes in business models of energy companies; Introducing adaptive change management for the energy transition.

By the end of 2023, the total installed capacity of Vietnam's power system was 83,765MW, of which renewable energy including wind power and solar power accounted for about 27%. In terms of power generation, plants under EVN and 3 Power Generation Corporations have a total capacity representing less than 38% of the total installed capacity. However, EVN keeps being assigned as the main role player in ensuring a stable and safe electricity supply for socio-economic development.

Renewable energy capacity, especially solar power, has increased rapidly in recent years, bringing Vietnam to the list of countries with the highest increase in renewable energy capacity in the world. This is an achievement, and at the same time posing difficulties and challenges to EVN, not only in the fields of generation operation but also in other fields such as organization and human resources, business, information technology, infrastructure, legal, etc., which must quickly catch up with these changes in the system, to put in place appropriate management tools and methods.
