Continued strengthening of cooperation between EVN and WB in energy sector

On the morning of September 17 in Hanoi, Mr. Dang Hoang An, Chairman of the Members' Council of EVN, met and worked with Mrs. Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, and the World Bank delegation. The two sides discussed promoting and expanding cooperation between EVN and the World Bank in the energy sector.

Also present at the meeting were Mrs. Zayra Romo, Senior Energy Specialist, Infrastructure Program Coordinator, and Head of WB Vietnam’s Energy Team, along with senior energy experts from the World Bank’s office in Vietnam.

On the side of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Vice President Nguyen Xuan Nam and leaders of various specialized departments also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Mrs. Mariam J. Sherman, WB Country Director for Vietnam, affirmed that the cooperation between WB and EVN has been long-standing and sustainable. In the coming time, the WB will continue providing technical and financial support to EVN for power projects, energy transition, and ongoing technical assistance activities between the two sides.

Mrs. Mariam J. Sherman also stated that the World Bank has extensive experience supporting energy transitions in many countries. With this experience, the WB is eager to continue assisting EVN in developing renewable energy sources such as pumped-storage hydropower, solar power, and offshore wind power.

Chairman of the Members' Council of EVN, Mr. Dang Hoang An, expressed his deep gratitude and highly appreciated the support of the WB to EVN in particular, and to the energy sector in general, over the past period. EVN values and looks forward to further support from the WB, not only in financial resources but also in policy advice, technical support, expertise, and vision to help EVN realize its development goals.

Regarding the potential ideas raised by the WB, EVN’s leadership emphasized that they will carefully consider suitable proposals for implementation in the near future.

At the meeting, Chairman Dang Hoang An also congratulated Mrs. Mariam J. Sherman on her recent appointment as WB Country Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, replacing Mrs. Carolyn Turk, who had just completed her term in Vietnam. He wished Mrs. Sherman success in her new role.

As part of the meeting, the two sides also exchanged and discussed relevant topics, such as the challenges facing the energy sector in general and EVN in particular, the cooperation plan between EVN and WB, WB's recommendations to ensure sustainability in the financial mechanism of the power sector, and technical assistance projects, including efficient power system operation amidst rising new energy sources like solar and wind power, the feasibility study of expanding hydropower plants and developing floating solar power on hydropower reservoirs.
