EVN attends Mekong - Lan Thuong Power Grid Connection Forum

On September 11, the Mekong - Lancang Power Grid Connection Forum 2021 was held in an online form. Mr. Ngo Son Hai - Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity  (EVN), head of the EVN delegation, attended the forum from Hanoi.

EVN Deputy General Director Ngo Son Hai speaks at the Forum.

This forum is hosted by China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., (CSG), with the participation of representatives of power units of nations under the Mekong - Lancang cooperation mechanism (China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia).

This is also one of the activities within the framework of the 5th anniversary of the Mekong - Lancang cooperation mechanism (2016 - 2021) and the 7th Great Mekong Subregion Cooperation Summit (GMS) 2021.

EVN Deputy General Director Ngo Son Hai said that, currently, EVN has been actively implementing projects to connect the grid and purchase electricity with nations in the region, for example, the project to sell power to Cambodia via the Chau Doc - Ta Keo 220kV transmission line; signed 18 agreements to import power from hydropower projects in Laos with a total capacity of 1,535MW; EVN continues to import power with the target of 3,000MW by 2025, 5,000MW by 2030, etc.

For China, EVN is currently importing power from China via the dual-circuit Guman - Lao Cai and Malutang 220kV - Ha Giang lines with a total capacity of 800MW. In addition, EVN is also actively negotiating with CSG to continue importing power from 2022 and studying import methods with a solution to connect high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) from 2025.

However, in the context of the complicated development of the global COVID-19 pandemic, including Vietnam and the nations of the Mekong sub-region, it has been posing urgent problems and major challenges in the electricity sector of the region and each nation.

In the coming time, Vietnam will continue to exchange power and import power from countries in the region, in order to contribute to diversifying energy supply sources for Vietnam and strengthening cooperation among countries in the region.

On this occasion, the Deputy General Director of EVN called on the power units of the member nations of the Mekong - Lancang cooperation mechanism to continue to support and promote cooperation so as to facilitate the expansion of power grid connection among nations, towards grid connection for the whole region.
