EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan (standing) informing about the operation of the power system at the meeting
The increase in renewable energy sources in recent years has made it difficult to maintain stability in the operation of the power system. Reported at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Duc Ninh - Director of the National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC) said that although renewable energy sources will reach nearly 20,000 MW by the end of 2020, accounting for 30% of the entire power system, but the output only accounts for about 12% of the whole system. In addition, a series of difficulties and obstacles pointed out by NLDC such as: forecasting solar and wind power generation capacity shows large errors due to the unstable characteristics of this type of source, or the larger load difference between peak and off-peak hours, or renewable energy sources are prioritized for mobilization, but NLDC still has to ensure the operation of the electricity market, and so on.
Sharing at the meeting, economist Pham Chi Lan - Former Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, "Clearly, EVN has demonstrated its great efforts and role in recent years in ensuring the operation of the electrical system".
Dr. Le Dang Doanh - Former Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) appraised EVN for clarifying many issues that experts still wondered about. He said that it is necessary to use policy tools to regulate electricity prices between off-peak and peak hours, in order to encourage power use during the off-peak hours.
Expert Le Dang Doanh highly appreciating the meticulousness of EVN
Dr. Nguyen Tien Thoa - Former Director of Price Management Department, Ministry of Finance commented that EVN has also proactively calculated the power supply scenario. This initiative is so essential. He also felt secure with the calculation that the power supply in the period of 2021-2025 will be guaranteed.
Expert Nguyen Tien Thoa highly appreciating EVN's initiative in calculating power supply scenarios
Showing meticulousness for better performance of the task
Total power consumption in 2020 is 217 billion kWh, increasing by 3.42% over the previous year. In the first 4 months of 2021 alone, the country's commercial power output reached 71 billion kWh, an increase of 6.74% over the same period in 2020. EVN leaders said that the figure is a low growth compared to previous years (average 9-10%/year). In fact, the power demand has grown slowly due to the impact of the pandemic, but the power supply has increased dramatically in the past 2 years, when investors have actively responded to the mechanisms and policies on the renewable energy development of the Government.
Over the past year, in order to operate the electricity system and electricity market to ensure safety, continuity and economy, EVN has always complied with Circulars and regulations of the State, ministries and branches, with the highest priority to ensure national energy security, maintain the stability of the power system. The Group has also made great efforts to keep the total production cost of the whole system at the lowest level.
EVN's General Director also affirmed that the decrease in renewable energy sources as well as other sources in the past years is an objective and undesirable situation. As a State-owned enterprise assigned with a key role in ensuring electricity for the country, EVN shall make every effort in ensuring safe, reliable and continuous operation of the power system. EVN wishes to receive the attention, sharing and support from all levels, branches, power-using enterprises, investors, economic sectors participating in Electricity activities.
