Low output of hydropower, EVN will maximally exploit coal thermal power, gas power to ensure sufficient power in dry season 2020

With the target to ensure safe operation, stabilize electricity system and electricity market, to meet the needs of power in Quarter II/2020 – peak time of the dry season and to be most tense period in the year. Vietnam Electricity (EVN) will exploit maximum coal thermal power and gas power from turbine resources; simultaneously mobilize the thermopower resources operating by diesel oil by load method and needs.

Hydropower will be exploited due to water inflow volume, to ensure to supply water for downstream. Noticeably, from the beginning of the year up to now, the water inflow in most of hydropower reservoirs all over the country almost at power level, especially in major hydropower reservoirs such as Hoa Binh, Son La, and Lai Chau. Especially in March 2020, total water amount flowing to hydropower reservoirs all over the country converted into electric power only attain nearly 1.51 billion kWh (561 million kWh lower than that of the year).

As per estimation, in Quarter II/2020, electricity output will increase approximately about 5.7% in comparison with the same period of 2019. The baseload of the system may attain  up to 750 million kWh/day averagely, the highest capacity of the whole system may reach up to 41.000MW.

Therefore, EVN requests power generating to ensure sufficient coal, gas supply for thermal power plants, especially the ones in Vinh Tan Power Center, Duyen Hai to meet the mobilization needs of the system. National Power Transmission Corporation strengthen the management and operation work to ensure safe, realizable operation for load transmission grid, and to serve continuous and high output transmission in dry season, especially  North and South500kV one.

Power Corporations promote programs on management of power needs, adjustment of load, aiming to ensure to supply power for the year 2020, at the same time to continuously maintain the work to disseminate information on power saving when sunny weather occurs in all the 3 regions in the coming period.

Besides, all units in EVN prepare ready plans for natural disaster prevention and search and rescue, ensure safety of dam, reservoirs and hydropower works, as well as ensure safety for the downstream in rainy, flooding and stormy seasons in 2020.

The units also need to speed up the progress of implementing investment, construction projects, especially some important power generation works such as: Duyen Hai 3 thermal power  expansion plant; Upper Kontum hydropower plant, Phuoc Thai 1 Solar plant Power, etc.

EVN also continues to implement the restructure, equitation of enterprise for Power Generation Corporations No. 1, 2; continue to implement the divestment at Dong Anh Electricity Equipment Corporation, Electricity Finance Joint Stock Corporation, reducing equity capital at Power Generation Corporation No. 3, etc.

By the end of quarter I/2020, EVN has ensured safe, stable supply to meet power needs for production and business and living activities of the people in localities, with the total commercial electricity output estimated at 49,28 billion kWh, increasing by 6,47% in comparison with the same period of last year. Especially, the Corporation also ensures to strengthen power supply for hospitals, health-care facilities and concentrated isolation areas to serve COVID-19 pandemic prevention work.

Also during quarter I/2020, due to reduction by 30.4 % in hydropower output compared to the same period of 2019, therefore, EVN has highly mobilized thermal power resource, in which high priced oil-fired thermopower sources have been mobilized at 1.02 billion kWh, increasing by nearly 1 billion kWh in comparison with the same period of 2019. The Corporation has also mobilized 2.76 billion kWh of regenerated energy sources including solar power attains 2.31 billion kWh, an increase of 28 times in comparison with the same period of 2019.

Currently, in the context that both political system and the people all over the country have been focusing on preventing COVID-19 pandemic, EVN and power units have been focusing on implementing “double duties”: implementing well the pandemic prevention work and ensuring production and business activities.
