Potential for wind power development in Ba Ria - Vung Tau

Developing renewable energy in general and offshore wind power, in particular, is considered a breakthrough solution for transiting energy and ensuring national energy security; it is one of the key tasks to ensure the socio-economic development, defense, and security of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and the Southeast region.

Regarding offshore wind power, Ba Ria-Vung Tau is considered a locality with great potential for development and is favorable in forming an inter-regional renewable energy industrial and service center.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has 3 advantages for developing offshore wind power. That is the wind energy potential when there is a wind speed of 8 ÷ 10m/s at an average height of 100m; the land below the sea surface is relatively flat; seabed depth of 20-40m as announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

In the area, there are already manufacturing enterprises serving the offshore wind power industry; along with a deep-water seaport system and relatively complete power grid infrastructure. At the same time, wind power development will meet the needs of on-site socio-economic development for the Southeast region; It is less expensive to invest in the transmission grid system to release capacity.

In addition, the development of offshore wind power can be combined with hydrogen production to ensure sustainable energy development, towards clean energy sources in the future.

According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Cong Vinh, developing renewable energy in general and offshore wind power is considered one of the breakthrough solutions for transiting energy and ensuring national energy security. This is also one of the major targets set in the Provincial Planning for 2021 - 2030, with a vision for 2050.
