On January 6, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), in coordination with the National System and Market Operator (NSMO) and relevant units, successfully energized the AT2 500kV – 900MVA transformer, thereby completing the project to upgrade the capacity of the Lai Chau 500kV Substation.

Earlier, on December 23, 2025, the AT1 500kV – 900MVA transformer under the project had also been successfully energized.
Following the energization of the upgraded AT2 transformer, the total capacity of the Lai Châu 500kV Substation reached 1,800MVA.
The project to upgrade the capacity of the Lai Chau 500kV Substation is a special-grade, Group B energy project, with EVNNPT serving as the investor. The substation is located in Nam Hang Commune, Lai Chau Province—an area with strategic importance in the Northwest regional power transmission system—playing a vital role in evacuating power output from large hydropower plants and interconnecting the regional grid with the national power system.
According to Mr. Vo Luong Nhan, Deputy Director of the Power Transmission Project Management Board (the unit representing EVNNPT in project management and execution), the Lai Chau 500kV Substation capacity upgrade project is large-scale and complex. It required ensuring the safe operation of the existing substation while simultaneously organizing the replacement and installation of large-scale equipment with high technical requirements under harsh weather conditions. Under the close and decisive direction of EVNNPT, together with the spirit of solidarity, responsibility, and strong determination of all stakeholders, the project gradually overcame difficulties while strictly controlling quality, occupational safety, and progress.
The upgraded Lai Chau 500kV Substation will efficiently utilize hydropower resources in Lai Chau and Son La provinces for transmission to the national power system, contributing to reduced overall power generation costs across the system. At the same time, the project enhances the reliability and safety of power supply, meets the socio-economic development needs of the region, reduces capacity and energy losses on the grid, and improves the efficiency of EVN’s and EVNNPT’s electricity production and business operations.
