By September 28, 2026, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) energized 22 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 145MW at 110kV substations across various provinces and cities in Northern Vietnam.

According to EVNNPC, the corporation’s BESS investment program comprises three phases, with a total capacity of 530MW across 83 110kV substations. The first phase involves deploying 305MW across 47 substations managed by eight power companies.

As of September 28, 22 of the 47 systems installed at substations in Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Lang Son, Ninh Binh, and Phu Tho had been commissioned.

On the power grid managed and operated by EVNNPC, peak load reached approximately 21,142 MW during the first six months of 2026. According to data provided by the National Power System and Market Operator (NSMO), during the 2027–2030 period, peak electricity demand in northern Vietnam is projected to increase by approximately 2,500–3,000MW annually, creating a need to expand supply capacity and make efficient use of existing infrastructure.

Alongside grid infrastructure development, BESS serve as a key operational solution to enhance local capacity dispatch, facilitate peak shaving, and alleviate grid strain during peak hours. This fosters greater operational flexibility, particularly amidst rapid load growth.

To make effective use of these systems, EVNNPC is coordinating with NSMO to reach agreement on operating principles, standardize data, and establish information exchange methods to determine appropriate charging and discharging times and optimal dispatch capacity.

In the next two phases, EVNNPC plans to invest in an additional 225MW of BESS capacity across 36 substations. Of this, 140MW across 23 substations is currently undergoing the necessary procedures.
