The Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant project (QTTPP1) plays a crucial role as a base power source, contributing to strengthening supply capacity and building a solid national energy foundation.

Driving force behind formation of large-scale power centers

QTTPP1 is one of the key national projects, belonging to the Quang Trach Power Center. The project was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 428/QD-TTg on adjusting the National Power Development Plan for the period 2011-2020, with a vision to 2030 (Adjusted Plan VII).

According to Document No. 1828/TTg-KTN, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) is assigned as the investor of the project; at the same time, EVN assigns the Power Project Management Board No. 2 (EVNPMB2) to act as the investor's representative, directly managing and operating the project implementation along with the components within the Quang Trach Power Center.

The project is being built on an area of approximately 48.6 hectares in Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province, to supplement a large-scale power source, contributing to ensuring national energy security and meeting the electricity needs for socio-economic development.

Speaking with a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Do Thanh Tai, Director of EVNPMB2, said that QTTPP1 is identified as the base power source of the electricity system. This is a highly stable power source, playing a role in maintaining the basic load for the entire system.

According to Mr. Do Thanh Tai, for the Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant, when the 500kV transmission line from Quang Trach to Pho Noi comes into operation, this power source supplying power for the northern region will play a particularly important role.

QTTPP1 is expected to be driving force for annual economic growth in Quang Tri province and North Central region.

QTTPP1 is not only a large-scale power generation project, but also plays a leading role in laying the foundation for the future formation and development of the Quang Trach Power Center. With a capacity of 1,403MW, the project is a pioneering item, taking a step ahead in completing the technical infrastructure, connecting to the power grid, and establishing an operational ecosystem for the entire center.

The implementation of QTTPP1 has contributed to shaping the spatial development structure of the Quang Trach Power Center, from internal transportation systems, fuel import ports, transmission infrastructure to technical conditions serving the synchronized operation of multiple power plants. This is an important prerequisite for attracting investment and promoting the implementation of subsequent component projects, especially in the context of the shift towards low-emission LNG power sources.

Furthermore, QTTPP1 also plays a pioneering role in ensuring energy security in the North Central region and the entire country, contributing to supplementing a stable base power source and creating room for the sustainable shift in the power source structure. Once coming into operation, the project will not only provide a large amount of electricity to the system but also play a balancing role, supporting the integration of increasingly abundant renewable energy sources.

It can be said that the progress and efficiency of QTTPP1 not only determine the success of a single project but are also key factors and driving forces for the entire roadmap to the formation of the Quang Trach Power Center.

Step forward in mastering technology

While the strategic role of the project is increasingly affirmed, the practical implementation capacity, especially the mastery of technology by domestic enterprises, is becoming a key factor determining the progress and quality of the construction.

Plant uses ultra-supercritical  (USC) boiler, which belongs to group of advanced coal-fired power plant technologies currently available.

It is evident that gradually mastering technology, equipment, and construction processes not only helps domestic enterprises enhance their competitiveness but also contributes to shortening project timelines, reducing dependence on foreign contractors, and thereby creating a solid foundation for the development of the power industry towards self-reliance and sustainability.

When QTTPP1 comes into operation, it will add a large-scale base power source to the system, contributing to ensuring national energy security and creating a foundation for the development of the Quang Trach Power Center.
