10 years of lighting up the Pearl Island Phu Quoc

Since February 2, 2014, people in Phu Quoc Island district (Kien Giang province) have had access to electricity supplied from the national grid instead of the previous costly diesel power source. Over the past 10 years, the national grid has made an important contribution to socio-economic development in this beautiful "Pearl Island".

Transoceanic power cable

The project of 110kV submarine cable across the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc sea is a significant project of the power sector in general and the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) in particular. The project aims to ensure a stable electricity supply for Phu Quoc island district from the national power system with a transmission capacity of up to 131MVA.

The main project item is a 57km long 110kV sea-crossing submarine cable. This is also the longest trans-sea submarine power cable in Southeast Asia, with a total investment cost of VND 2,336 billion. The submarine cable starts from Thuan Yen commune, Ha Tien town and the ending point is at Ham Ninh commune, Phu Quoc district. Before that, to serve the connection of the Phu Quoc submarine cable project and enhance the electricity supply for Ha Tien town, EVNSPC invested in two 110kV power grid projects in sync with this project, including Kien Luong - Ha Tien double circuit 110kV line with a length of 18.2 km and Ha Tien 110/22kV substation with a capacity of 40MVA.

To fully exploit the use of the precious power source brought from the mainland, the Southern Power Corporation has deployed power grid infrastructure projects on the island. EVNSPC clearly defines the goal of improving electricity supply capacity and supplying new electricity to people in the areas of Ganh Dau and Bai Thom communes as well as other important loads on Phu Quoc Island District such as Phu Quoc International Airport, An Thoi International Seaport, etc.

Awaken the economic development potential

It can be said that the project of 110kV submarine cable across the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc sea has helped people and businesses in Phu Quoc island district in the past 10 years "transform" positively thanks to a safe and stable power source. Electricity prices on Pearl Island have now come down to an average level of the mainland, nearly 50% lower than the previous non-grid time.

According to the Southern Power Corporation, after Ha Tien - Phu Quoc 110kV submarine cable came into operation, Phu Quoc's electricity loads have increased constantly at an average rate of over 45%/year. This is a very high growth rate compared to many other localities.

To meet the rapidly increasing electricity demand of Phu Quoc island, the Southern Power Corporation has increased the capacity of substations and further invested in many power projects on the island. Among them, it should be mentioned Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220kV transmission line with a total investment cost of up to VND 2,212 billion to enhance the power supply. After energizing the project, the prolonged overload situation on the Phu Quoc island distribution grid has been basically resolved, and the reliability of the power supply has been increasingly improved.
