Coal-fired and gas turbine thermal power plants highly mobilized by EVN over first three months

Over the first three months of 2016, the power supply governed by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) closely followed power demands and demand growth rate, ensuring that the mobilization of power generation sources has been conducted properly in conformity with hydrographic situation, gas supply capabilities, as well as ensuring water supply for drought prevention and agricultural production.

In the first quarter of 2016, the amount of power output generated and purchased by EVN was estimated at 39.13 billion kWh. Of which hydropower sources were mobilized by the national power system to a limited extent (at approximately 9.54 billion kWh) to maintain the  neccessary water level of hydropower reservoirs to ensure drought prevention and power supply until the end of dry season. Many hydropower reservoirs in Central and Southern regions have gradually been separated from the electricity market, only maintaining operation at a moderate level, at the same time supplying water to downstream areas according to the regulation of local governments and inter-reservoir regulations. Hydropower reservoirs on Red River basin were highly mobilized since the water inflow was high enough.

Particularly in the first quarter, EVN implemented two water supplies to serve agricultural production for Winter Spring harvest of 2015 – 2016 in the Northern midlands and deltas with the supply duration of 11.25 days and the total amount of water supply of 3.03 billion m3.

In order to ensure the best electricity sources for the power system, coal-fired generation source was highly mobilized from the second half of February, the mobilization was enhanced to nearly maximum level (6.52 billion kWh mobilized in the first quarter). Vinh Tan 2 and Duyen Hai 1 units have been operated stably and thus contributed to stabilizing the power supply for the South and reducing oil-fired thermal power ouput needed to be mobilized.

In addition to coal-fired thermal power source, gas turbines have been mobilized to nearly maximum level in line with gas supply capabilities and the number of available units in order to ensure power supply to the South.

In order to supply power sufficiently and safely until the end of dry season, in the coming time, EVN shall continue to mobilize its power generation sources properly.

EVN has requested power generation companies to stably operate coal-fired thermal power units, especially Vinh Tan 2 and Duyen Hai 1 thermal power plants. The plants should prepare adequate fuels (coal, oil, etc.), materials, equipments, manpower ready for dispatch orders by National Load Dispatch Center.

National Transmission Power Corporation has been operating the transmission network safely and reliably, particularly North – South 500-kV transmission system under high transmission condition to the South.

Power Corporations should maintain their power savings, especially within their service areas in Central and Southern provinces and cities. Strengthening communication via mass media should be implemented in order to improve the awareness of power saving of social communities and enterprises.

As estimated by EVN, in the second quarter of 2016, the power system will meet electricity demand during dry months with the predicted growth rate at about 13% in comparison with the same period last year.

In May and June particularly, the system load may reach 540 million kWh/day on average, of which the load in the South may average 250 million kWh/day; the peak capacity of the whole system may reach 28,730 MW.
