Completing installation of shunt capacitor of eight 220kV substations to ensure power supply for North from summer 2024

On 28 April 2024, the National Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB) completed the installation of shunt capacitors at eight 220kV substations in the Northern Region under the project "Installation of power transmission grid capacitors in the Northern Region in 2024". Completion of the project makes an important contribution to ensuring power supply for the Northern region following the direction of the Prime Minister and Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

The project is invested by the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT). NPTPMB, on behalf of the investor, directly manages and implements the project. This is a level II, group B energy work with a total investment of nearly VND 190 billion implemented at eight 220kV substations in 7 provinces/cities which are major load centers including Long Bien 220kV substation (Hanoi), Quang Chau substation (Bac Giang), Kim Dong substation (Yen My, Hung Yen), Thanh Nghi substation (Ha Nam), Bac Ninh 3 substation (Bac Ninh), Vinh Tuong substation (Vinh Phuc), Hai Ha substation (Quang Ninh).

Installation scale of the project consists of seven 110kV - 50MVAr shunt capacitor banks and equipment to complete bay at Long Bien 220kV, Quang Chau, Kim Dong, Yen My, Thanh Nghi, Bac Ninh 3 and Vinh Tuong substations; 110kV - 25MVAr shunt capacitor bank and equipment to complete the bay at  Hai Ha 220kV substation (total compensation capacity 375MVA).

Mr. Vo Luong Nhan - Deputy Director of NPTPMB said: According to plan, the project will be completed in May 2024. However, to help ensure the voltage is within the allowable limits of the power transmission grid in the Northern region, meet the power demand for important loads in the region as well as enhance power supply stability, and reduce capacity and power loss in the system, EVNNPT has requested that the project be completed early and put into operation before 30 April 2024. In particular, implementing projects at existing substations when constructing in conditions where nearby equipment is energized requires absolute safety.

The early completion of the project helps ensure that the voltage is within the allowable limits of the power transmission grid in the Northern region, meeting the power needs of important loads in the region, increasing power supply stability, reducing capacity and power loss in the system, improving production and business efficiency of Vietnam Electricity.

The completion of the project also affirms NPTPMB's implementation capacity for projects of urgent nature, tight implementation time, complex techniques, and simultaneous construction at many locations.
