Rooftop solar power: Effective cost-saving solution for Northern Vietnam customers

Rooftop solar power, following the self-generation - self-consumption model, has become a proactive energy solution for households and businesses in Northern Vietnam. Not only does this model help customers reduce electricity bills, but it also contributes to alleviating pressure on the national grid, moving towards sustainable development, and a green energy transition.

Nearly 8,700 customers installed rooftop solar systems

According to Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), as of June 30, 2025, a total of 8,664 customers across 17 Northern provinces and cities (excluding Hanoi) had installed rooftop solar systems, with a total capacity of 577.1MWp.

In June 2025 alone, despite unfavorable weather conditions, the electricity output fed into the grid from these systems was estimated at 52.7 million kWh. In the first six months of the year, cumulative rooftop solar power generation reached over 226 million kWh. EVNNPC estimates it will purchase approximately 530 million kWh of rooftop solar electricity in 2025, at a cost of nearly VND 1,005 billion.

Practical implementation has shown the clear effectiveness of the rooftop solar model. For example, at Nam Dinh Mechanical Company (Ninh Binh), a 350kWp rooftop solar system installed on a 2,000m² factory roof supplies approximately 35% of the company’s electricity demand, saving an average of VND 100 million per month.

EVNNPC promotes rooftop solar development

According to Ms. Trinh Thi Kim Ngan - Head of EVNNPC Communication Department, although the average solar irradiation potential in Northern Vietnam is lower than in other regions, it is still sufficient for effective rooftop solar deployment. The self-generation - self-consumption model not only helps customers reduce their electricity bills but also assists the power sector in shaving peak-load, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to environmental protection.

EVNNPC has issued multiple guidelines to support local power companies in promoting this model and has called for collaboration from local authorities, departments, and social organizations to encourage households and businesses to install rooftop solar power.

According to the adjusted Power Development Plan VIII, Vietnam’s rooftop solar potential is estimated at around 48,200MW. Promoting self-generation, self-consumption rooftop solar power is a key solution to reducing power supply pressure, cutting costs for households and businesses, and contributing significantly to ensuring energy security, green economic growth, and sustainable development in line with Government policy.
