EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan welcomed the Ambassador of Norway and the Ambassador of Finland

On 31 March 2022, in Hanoi, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – Vietnam Electricity (EVN) General Director had a courtesy meeting with Ms. Grete Lochen - Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam and Mr. Keijo Norvanto – Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam. Cooperation in renewable energy development and energy transition in Vietnam was the main subject of discussion at the meeting.

Ms. Grete Lochen - Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated Vietnam's commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 at COP26. In the coming time, Norway will prioritize cooperation with Vietnam on renewable energy development, including solar power and offshore wind power. The Norwegian government will provide financial support to promote the development of renewable energy in Vietnam.

Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – General Director of EVN welcomed and worked with the Ambassador of Norway and the Ambassador of Finland to Vietnam

According to Mr. Keijo Norvanto - Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam, businesses in Finland as well as in Nordic countries have been working together to solve climate change issues. Finland wishes to cooperate with Vietnam in renewable energy development and energy transition. Finland will give support when possible, including financial support to help Vietnam realize its energy transition and fulfill its commitment at COP26.

At the meeting, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – General Director of EVN said that in order to fulfill the commitment at COP26, Vietnam needs the support and assistance of countries as well as international financial institutions to properly transit its energy structure. In the past 3 years, renewable energy in Vietnam has had strong development, currently reaching more than 21,000MW, accounting for one-third of the total installed capacity of the national power system, including more than 16,000MW of solar energy and about 4,000MW of wind energy. However, the massive development of renewable energy sources in the South has caused many difficulties in the power system operation.

From now to 2025, the power supply to the Northern region will face many difficulties. EVN has proposed to the Government to consider and have a mechanism to encourage and rapidly develop renewable energy sources, mainly grid-connected wind power and solar power in the Northern region, together with battery energy storage systems. At the same time, a mechanism should be in place to promote the development of self-production and self-consumption rooftop PV systems.

At the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation orientations between Norwegian and Finnish businesses and EVN in the coming time, especially in the Northern region.
