EVN calculates power supply–demand in 2021

On 7 October 2020, in Hanoi, EVN’s General Director Tran Dinh Nhan chaired a meeting on EVN’s power system operation plan for 2021.

Presenting his options at the meeting, representative of A0 said that, in case of basic option, total energy production of the whole system in 2021 is forecast at about 267.9 billion kWh, an increase of 7.15% compared with that of 2020; maximum capacity will reach 42,332MW, an increase by 9.65% over that of 2020.

Leader of A0 reporting on options of power system operation for 2021.

In case of high option, the energy production is forecast at 269.8 billion kWh, an increase of 7.93% compared with that of 2020; maximum capacity will reach 42,639MW, up to 10.58%

A0 worked out solutions for operating the power system safely, reliably and economically based on each option.

According to A0’s report, 5,456MW of traditional power would be added to the national power system by the end of 2021, including 656MW of hydropower and 4,800MW of thermal power.

Regarding renewable energy (RE), if we include sources of solar and wind power supplemented to the plan, meeting the conditions to enjoy feed-in-tariff (FIT), the total RE resources will reach about 20,198MW by the end of 2021.

By assessment, power supply in 2021 may be basically maintained but for extreme or unexpected hydrographical changes or schedules of new power projects.

The national power system will cover the peak load with a reserve of 5,000–11,000MW all year round; especially reserve power in the South only will be nearly 1,600–3,600MW, provided that these projects are ensured on schedule.

EVN’s General Director Tran Dinh Nhan required National Load Dispatch Center and other units to maximally support solar power investors in putting their projects into commercial operation before 30 December 2020.

Mr. Nhan also asked National Power Transmission Corporation to boost the grid projects in order to release capacity of power sources, especially projects such as Nghi Son 2, Hai Duong, Song Hau and Duyen Hai 2.

The General Director requested A0 to update, adjust calculation options based on the suggestions of departments and collect information about load forecast from power corporations.
