EVN hydropower reservoirs discharge 3.62 billion m3 of water to serve winter-spring crop in the Northern Midlands and Delta

As for the last two phases of water intake, the hydropower reservoirs of Vietnam Electricity have operated at maximal capacity to supply water for the downstream. At the end of the last day of the second phase (February 8, 2023), the total amount of discharge water was 3.62 billion m3, effectively serving the localities in the Northern Midlands and Delta preparing for planting the winter-spring crop in 2022-2023.

Water source guaranteed for rice cultivation

Mr. Luong Van Anh - Deputy Director-General of the General Department of Irrigation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: During the time of water supply for rice cultivation, Vietnam Electricity has maximally operated Hoa Binh, Thac Ba and Tuyen Quang Hydropower Plants 2-3 days in advance to replenish water for downstream. The average water level at the Hanoi Hydrological Station in Phase 1 was 1.56m, the highest level was 1.92m; Phase 2 reached 1.61m, the highest reached 2.08m.

By the end of Phase 2, the total area supplied with water was 476,297 ha/498,359 ha, reaching 95.6% of the planned rice-cultivation area. Provinces that have not completed water intake include Vinh Phuc (95%), Bac Ninh (95%), Hai Duong (94%), Hanoi (81%). In which, the area dependent on the Red River flow totals about 3,622 ha, belonging to Hoai Duc, Thach That, Ba Vi, Son Tay and Phuc Tho districts (Hanoi City). Field pumping stations will continue to supply areas that have not yet filled with enough water.


Available water sources creating favorable conditions for many localities to complete the water supply for rice cultivation soon
