EVNHANOI: Reducing power loss thanks to grid modernization and leadership accountability

Reducing the power loss rate on the grid is one of the most important solutions to improve production and business efficiency, which has been paid a lot of attention to by Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI). With the drastic direction spirit, EVNHANOI has implemented many synchronous solutions, including leadership accountability imposed on member units.

Equipping monitoring and warning systems at distribution substations

For many years, the power grid in Hanoi has been constantly upgraded and synchronized to secure safe, stable, and reliable power supply for the leading economic and political center of the country. At the same time, EVNHANOI has been gradually modernizing the power grid by making the most of advanced technologies to move towards building a smart grid. This process has been contributing to reducing the power loss rate on the grid of EVNHANOI by around 0.36% on average annually over the years 2015 - 2021. Specifically, the power loss rate on the distribution network of EVNHANOI has been reduced from 5.71% in 2015 down to 3.55% in 2021. However, the above power loss rate has approached the technical loss rate. Therefore, keeping power loss steady from the load growth while further reducing power loss as planned is a difficult task for EVNHANOI, especially when operating the power grid system in extreme climate and weather conditions in the Northern region.

To solve this difficult problem, in August 2022, EVNHANOI has equipped with an operating parameter and temperature monitoring system, warning abnormals at distribution substations on the grid of the Capital city.

In coming time, EVNHANOI strives to bring power loss rate down to ≤ 3.35%

According to EVNHANOI, the reduction in power loss due to technical loss of distribution substations and networks is mainly caused by transformers and the power grid operating at full load, overload, phase difference, or poor contact at terminals. Therefore, with the monitoring system in operation, technical operational loss of substations is estimated to decrease from 0.2% to 2% (subject to the actual operation situation). Besides, the timely prevention of violations of electricity use has been actively implemented by the Corporation. Typically, local power operation management teams, specialized substation customer management teams, and electricity usage monitoring and inspection teams are requested to strengthen the inspection of metering systems, arrange staff to monitor, supervise and promptly handle errors of data connection with automatic meter reading systems; check the operation of metering systems at specialized substations, public substations with high power loss, etc.

Monitoring and warning system contributes to ensuring safe operation and improving operation quality of distribution substations and low-voltage grid systems

Accumulated in the first 4 months of 2023, EVNHANOI's power loss rate reached 3.10%, down 0.11% over the same period in 2022; the power supply reliability achieved the set targets. It is projected that by synchronously implementing solutions to reduce power loss rate, the Corporation has saved about VND 14.48 billion in cost.

Power loss rate of EVNHANOI in the 2019-2022 period

In the coming time, EVNHANOI strives to bring the power loss rate down to ≤ 3.35%. Besides, to meet the growth rate of power sales, a  huge volume of investment in power generation and grid will be required. In particular, the power grid will be invested to become more modernized,  ensuring safe and reliable grid operation and contributing to reducing the power loss rate. EVNHANOI has determined that the realization of grid automation is an essential step that needs to be done according to the smart grid development roadmap of the Government, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and EVN, in order to operate the power grid in a more proactive and accurate manner, optimizing grid performance, improving the production and business efficiency, bringing value to customers and EVNHANOI.

In 2022, with the determination and efforts of all the member units, the power loss rate of EVNHANOI is at 3.35%, 0.20% lower than that of 2021 and 0.20% lower than the plan assigned by EVN, exceeding the plan for the period of 2021-2025.
