Ho Chi Minh Power Corporation for green energy

Organizing information campaigns, implementing incentives for rooftop solar (RTS) development, pioneering in fitting solar panels at its facilities, piloting electric vehicles - with proactive steps, the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC) has been embracing its role in the city’s efforts towards green, clean energy, and environmental protection.

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is situated in a region that receives the most sunshine throughout the year in Vietnam. According to data from the Green Energy Program of HCMC, the city’s solar irradiation averages at around 1,581 kWh/m2/year, peaked at 6.3 kWh/m2/day in February and reaches the lowest point in July at 3.3 kWh/m2/day. The average hours of sunshine in a month range from 100-300 hours, with up to 300 hours/month for the dry season and 150 hours/month in the rainy season. Therefore, there is great development potential for RTS in HCMC.

In recent years, thanks to the Government’s incentive mechanisms and EVNHCM-organized information and encouraging activities, RTS in the city has seen development in leaps and bounds. As records showed in 2013, the total city-wide grid-connected RTS power was just 200kWp, by August 2021, it has reached 365,330kWp.

True to the motive it shared with customers, EVNHCMC has pioneered in introducing RTS to its facilities with investments made to install RTS systems on the buildings of its headquarters and subsidiaries, and at its 220kV and 110kV substations. As of today, the entire corporation owns 94 RTS systems with a total installed capacity of 5.6MWp.

To continue its successes in developing RTS, early on 2021, EVNHCMC introduced and piloted electric motorbikes for electricians at two of its subsidiaries, Saigon and Hoc Mon Power Companies, with plans to provide 400 more to electricians at all remaining by year’s end.

This is part of the Corporation’s effort towards the standardization of means and tools and production safety enhancement, providing the most favorable working condition for workers while promoting clean energy and environmental protection.

For the prospects of investment in charging stations, EVNHCMC is coordinating with VinFast, a domestic electric vehicle manufacturer to develop charging station infrastructure for the city in response to the enormous demand for electric vehicles expected in Ho Chi Minh City in the near future.

As Ho Chi Minh City is one of the major socio-economic centers with the highest growth rate in Vietnam, its electricity demand increases annually to serve the socio-economic development. The city’s electricity consumption grew at a rate of roughly 5%-6% each year in the 2015-2019 period, corresponding to a GRDP growth rate of about 7%-9% per year. In the next period, this trend of increment in power consumption is expected to continue. To meet the demands arising from the city’s rapid socio-economic development and urbanization, aside from investing in grid projects to enhance power supply capacity, EVNHCMC also takes up the responsibility to inspire the development of clean and green energy across the city.
