Implementing Rural and Island Power Project for the Period 2015-2020
Recently, 22 feasibility studies of rural and island power projects of Vietnam Electricity has been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the period 2015-2020 under the Rural, Mountainous and Island Power Supply Program for 2013-2020 issued by the decision 2119/2013/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister. The Vietnam Electricity is assigned as the coordinating agency and the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) and the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) are the project owners.
Among the 22 power projects, there are 21 rural and island power projects to be supplied from the national grid and 1 power project for the Bach Long Vi Island district (Hai Phong City) to be supplied from mixed generation sources of wind and solar hybrid system, diesel and energy storage.
The overall objective of the project is to develop the medium and low voltage networks contributing to ensure most of the rural households get access to electricity by the year 2020. The projects will provide electricity from the national grid to the people, border guard and marine police forces in the villages, hamlets, island communes that have not been connected or unofficially connected to electricity. The projects will contribute to hunger and poverty eradication, social and economic development, and gradually raising the living conditions for the people of ethnic groups in the remote, border and Island areas; ensuring the security of national defense and political stability in the provinces, upholding the sovereignty of the country border and the Sea Island areas.
Now, the EVN has completed the preparation of investment and directed the Power Corporations to perform the projects ensuring the approved quality and progress. After the completion of the projects, there are over 7,236 km of the medium voltage lines, 13,640 km of low voltage lines, over 8,500 substation invested and over 262,500 households is supplied directly from the national grid as well as benefited from the electricity price policy of the Government.

To ensure uninterrupted power supply and meet the requirement of sea economic development and uphold the security of national defense and the sovereignty of the national territory, Vietnam Electricity invested to supply power for 9 out of 12 island districts including Ly Son (Quang Ngai); Phu Quoc, Kien Hai (Kien Giang); Phu Quy (Binh Thuan); Van Don, Co To (Quang Ninh), Cat Hai, Bach Long Vy (Hai Phong), Con Dao (Ba Ria-Vung Tau). The coverage of the power grid to the households in the remote areas of Vietnam is to the extent that not many countries in the world can achieve. According to the World Bank, Vietnam is the country to successfully and efficiently implement the investment for rural electricity.
