The Prime Minister has requested the Ministry of Public Security to take the prime responsibility and coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of National Defense, the People's Committee of Lai Chau Province, Vietnam Electricity and relevant ministries and agencies in planning, formulating and implementing protection plans in compliance with legal regulations on protection of significant installations related to national security.
Lai Chau Hydropower Plant is currently managed and operated by Son La Hydropower Company (under Vietnam Electricity). The plant is located in Nam Nhun district, Lai Chau province, comprising 3 power units with the total installed capacity of 1,200MW.
The feasibility study of Lai Chau Hydropower Plant project was approved by the Prime Minister in June 2010. Its technical design was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the end of 2011. The project has a total investment cost of VND 35,700 billion.
This is the last large scale hydropower project in Vietnam being exploited on the Da river cascade, together with Son La Hydropower and Hoa Binh Hydropower Plants. At the same time, this is multi-purpose hydropower project of national significance, being self - performed by Vietnamese engineers and workers in all planning, designing, construction, installation, equipment synchronization, project supervision, operation and maintenance phases.
Up to now, all 3 hydropower plants on the Da river cascade including Hoa Binh, Son La and Lai Chau have been all recognized as important installations related to national security.
