Ahead of the dry season peak, thermal power plants under Vietnam Electricity (EVN) are intensifying efforts in fuel preparation, equipment maintenance, and spare parts readiness to meet the system’s high demand.

Electric load demand in 2026 is forecast to continue increasing in both total output and peak capacity during the dry months. EVN has identified ensuring the electricity supply as a key political task and top priority for 2026. From the beginning of the year, the Group issued directives requiring power generation corporations and plants to proactively plan fuel supply—coal and gas—and ensure no fuel shortages under any circumstances.

Ensuring fuel for power generation

Implementing EVN’s directives, Power Generation Corporation 1 (EVNGENCO1) has developed detailed operation plans for the 2026 dry season, focusing on securing fuel supply and improving the availability of generating units. A representative of EVNGENCO1 stated that since late 2025, its affiliated power plants have strengthened coordination with suppliers to develop fuel procurement plans aligned with actual operational needs. At the same time, they have prepared infrastructure for receiving and storing coal to ensure a stable supply during the early months of the year and the dry season peak. Early fuel preparation is considered a key solution to maintain stable plant operations and meet the dispatch requirements of the national power system.

Quang Ninh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (under EVNGENCO1) reported that it has signed coal supply contracts sufficient for year-round operation, while maintaining stable inventory levels to meet peak demand periods, especially during the Lunar New Year and dry season. In 2026, the plant is expected to generate approximately 7.8 billion kWh.

At Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (under EVNGENCO2), coal purchase contracts with Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) and Dong Bac Corporation were completed early in the year. The generating units are operating safely and stably, ready to meet dispatch requirements. In 2026, the plant targets an output of approximately 6.84 billion kWh, including about 3.85 billion kWh during the dry season.

In the southern region, Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company, which operates Duyen Hai 1, Duyen Hai 3, and Duyen Hai 3 Expansion plants, is also maintaining sufficient coal inventory for operations during the dry season.

Technical review and adequate spare parts preparation

Alongside fuel assurance, thermal power plants are focusing on completing scheduled maintenance and overhaul works, while organizing 24/7 operation and maintenance teams to promptly handle any arising issues.

According to Power Generation Corporation 1, in February 2026, the corporation carried out maintenance and repairs at key generating units in thermal power plants such as Uong Bi, Quang Ninh, Nghi Son, Duyen Hai 1, and Duyen Hai 3 Expansion.

At Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVNGENCO3), during the recent Lunar New Year holiday, the company took advantage of low load periods to simultaneously conduct maintenance and repair activities at multiple plants. To date, major overhauls have been completed for generating units at Vinh Tan 2, Vinh Tan 4, and Mong Duong 1 thermal power plants.

In the context of rising electricity demand and potentially extreme weather conditions, early preparation of fuel, equipment, and human resources will help enhance the reliability of the power system, ensuring safe and continuous electricity supply for production and daily life during the 2026 hot season.
