Phu My Power Center
Phu My Thermal Power Company (a subsidiary of EVNGENCO3) originated from Phu My Power Plant, which was established on 15 February 1997. Its initial foundation consisted of two simple-cycle gas turbine units with a total installed capacity of 288MW, utilizing associated gas from the Bach Ho oil field.
Throughout its development, the Company gradually took over, managed, and operated modern combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants, including Phu My 2.1, Phu My 2.1 Expansion, Phu My 1, and Phu My 4, bringing its total installed capacity to 2,540MW.
Together with the BOT power plants (which were subsequently transferred to EVNGENCO3 for management and operation), the Company helped establish the Phu My Power Center - one of the largest power generation centers in Vietnam - with a total capacity of nearly 4,000MW. The center utilizes combined-cycle gas turbine technology and natural gas supplied from offshore fields in the southern continental shelf, including the Nam Con Son Basin, the Cuu Long Basin, and several other areas.
In addition to its significant contribution to electricity generation, the power plants operated by Phu My Thermal Power Company are equipped with gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and distributed control systems (DCS) supplied by leading global manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Siemens, General Electric, ABB, and Alstom. Through the successful transfer, mastery, and efficient operation of these technologies, the Company's power plants in particular, and the Phu My Power Center in general, have become a “cradle” for training and developing highly qualified human resources for Vietnam’s power sector. Many engineers who gained hands-on experience in plant operation and maintenance at Phu My have gone on to become key personnel at power plants and major energy projects across the country.
Meeting new operational requirements
Behind the milestone of 350 billion kWh is a journey of nearly three decades of maintaining the safe, continuous, and efficient operation of generating units. To date, the power plants of Phu My Thermal Power Company have achieved 1.4 million safe operating hours. Maintenance and overhaul work has always been carried out in accordance with manufacturers’ standards, while the Company has gradually enhanced its technical self-reliance and proactively handled operational abnormalities arising during plant operation. As a result, the availability factor of the plants has consistently remained above 93%, higher than the average range of 85-92% recorded by many combined-cycle gas turbine power plants in the ASEAN region.
In particular, during peak dry-season periods, the electricity output generated and supplied to the grid by the Company’s power plants has at times exceeded 50 million kWh per day, making an important contribution to ensuring electricity supply for socio-economic development in Southern Vietnam and across the country.

Over the past five years, the number of unit start-ups and shutdowns has increased significantly, reaching nearly 1,000 times in some years. This has placed considerable pressure on both equipment and operating personnel. However, through practical experience and strict compliance with technical procedures, the plants have continued to maintain high unit availability and effectively meet the dispatch requirements of the national power system.
In implementing the policy of promoting science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation throughout Vietnam Electricity (EVN), and under the direction of EVNGENCO3, the power plants operated by Phu My Thermal Power Company have deployed numerous solutions, including the application of artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, remote monitoring robots, electronic operation logs, the development of shared databases, and the creation of automated tools for evaluating operating parameters and providing early warnings of equipment abnormalities.
Entering a new stage of development, amid the energy sector’s transition toward a greener and more sustainable future, Phu My Thermal Power Company continues to accelerate digital transformation, improve operational efficiency, and research new technological solutions such as hydrogen co-firing, carbon capture, and emission reduction measures, contributing to Vietnam’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Through the nearly 30-year journey of establishment and development, Phu My Thermal Power Company has demonstrated its important role in helping ensure the continuity of the nation’s energy supply, contributing to the common goal of national development.
