Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Project: Advanced, environmentally friendly technology

Thanks to applying environmentally friendly and clean power generation technology, Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant Project has been positively supported and accepted by local people and many experts in the field of power production.

To ensure national energy security, by 2030, Vietnam needs about 55,300MW of coal fired thermal power capacity, accounting for approximately 53.2% of the total electricity output of the whole system. According to Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, in the current context, further development of coal fired thermal power plants is still necessitated in Vietnam, associated with the requirement of emission reduction and environmental protection.

In fact, the "challenge" of effectively operating coal-fired thermal power plants associated with environmental protection is a big concern of the public throughout the past time. Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh – Vice President of EVN affirmed that the existing technology can afford to minimize negative impacts of thermal power on the environment. In the process of development, EVN has been paying great attention to environmental protection, reflected in the investment in and selection of "green" technologies and efficient operation of thermal power plants. Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant will apply the leading advanced environmental protection technology in Vietnam.

Perspective of Quang Trach Thermal Power Complex

Specifically, Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant will be invested with supercritical combustion technology. According to Associate Prof. Dr. Truong Duy Nghia - Chairman of Vietnam Thermal Science and Technology Association: Supercritical technology requires the equipment system of the Plant to be top advanced in the world. Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant will be equipped with advanced environmental protection equipment such as electrostatic precipitator system with efficiency up to 99.75%, ensuring that no adverse impacts will be made on the habitat surrounding the plant.

As for coal ash and slag of the Plant, due to the use of bituminous coal with greater heat content, the carbon residue in the ash and slag will be very low. On the other hand, ash and slag are also the main raw materials for producing construction materials.

Regarding exhaust gas emissions, the Plant will treat SOx by sea water using Sea-FGD technology. This method produces sulfate salts, which are inherently available in seawater, so does not impact the aquatic environment. Associate Prof. Dr. Truong Duy Nghia analyzed that the amount of SOx emission into the environment ensures below 229.8 mg/Nm3, lower than the requirement at QCVN 22: 2009/BTNMT. At the same time, Sea-FGD technology does not create solid waste like gypsum as some other technologies. As a result, the Plant will minimize its release of wastes to the environment. With NOx, the plant will use ammonia to absorb and produce ammonium nitrate which is used effectively in chemical fertilizer production.

In order to make it easier for people to access and monitor environmental information, emission parameters will be displayed at an electronic panel placed right at the power plant, and these data will be transmitted online to the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment for their control 24/7.

Many domestic and foreign thermoelectric experts have evaluated that environmental protection technology is the strength of this power plant. According to Mr. Yoshikazu Ikai - Deputy General Secretary of Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL): “Many thermal power plants in Japan and developed countries in the world also use advanced technologies similar to the ones used in Quang Trach 1 thermal power plant to protect the environment ”.
