Renewable energy: The key to encouraging craft village development

Thanks to the use of renewable energy (sunlight, wind, biomass, etc.), some traditional craft villages can save fuel, take initiative in production and contribute to sustainable protection of environment.

Practical effects

Bao Hong spring rolls production establishment in Mui village, Bich Hoa commune was the first unit of Thanh Oai to apply the theme "Research and develop a model of drying  spring rolls using appropriate renewable energy sources in line with the requirements of the craft village”. Drying with clean technology, using solar energy and biomass energy has helped his family to be proactive in business, not having to stop production due to the weather conditions.

Need more incentive mechanisms

Dr. Nguyen Thang Long from Vietnam Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Association said that Vietnam is situated in a favourable condition with a long coastline, tropical monsoon climate and agricultural economy, so its renewable energy sources are abundant and diversified. Therefore, they can be exploited for energy production such as hydropower, wind, solar power, biomass, etc. By the end of 2018, Vietnam has successfully developed many renewable energy projects with 285 small hydropower plants, 8 wind power plants and 10 biomass power plants, etc. Because of being a source of energy from nature, costs for fuel and maintenance are low and machinery  durability is many times higher. However, the disadvantagee of renewable energy are  that the initial investment costs are often high and performance efficiency can be affected by weather factors.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thang Long, based on the conditions of each region, craft villages should take advantage of these renewable energy sources in production and restrict the use of finite fuel sources such as coal, gas, etc. However, to make it capable to turn renewable energy into commercial energy is a long process. Therefore, techniques and technologies should be developed to exploit effectively  and reduce production costs.

To encourage and serve the goals of renewable energy development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has developed and submitted to the Government a series of mechanisms such as Feed-Tariff for solar power, wind power, power generated from solid waste, biomass power, etc. The Government also issued other preferential policies for investors such as giving priority to providing free credit, reducing corporate income tax and land rental, etc.
