The first three-phase 500kV - 467MVA transformer manufactured by Vietnamese engineers has been operating stably

After more than 10 months of being put into use, the 500kV standby power transformer for Lai Chau and Son La Hydropower Plants (the first three-phase 500kV – 467MVA transformer manufactured by Vietnamese engineers) is operating safely and stably at Son La Hydropower Plant, fully meeting the highest international standards applied in the world today.

In response to the requirement of ensuring energy security, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and EVN have realized the need to invest in a standby power transformer for both Lai Chau and Son La Hydropower Plants. The Government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have directed EVN to implement the contractor appointment scheme for the package of procuring a standby transformer for the Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants.

In fact, very few countries in the world possess the technology of manufacturing three-phase ultra-high-voltage power transformers. In Vietnam, Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation - Joint Stock Company (EEMC) has already manufactured 500kV transformers but only single-phase transmission ones. However, EVN has placed its trust and given its best support for the development of domestic equipment manufacturers. EEMC has been selected by EVN as the contractor to supply and install this standby transformer. After more than 3 years of research, design and manufacture, EEMC has succeeded in producing for the first time a three-phase 500kV power transformer with a capacity of 467MVA.

Chairman of EVN’s Board of Directors Duong Quang Thanh awarded EVN’s Certificate of Merit to collectives with excellent achievements in the manufacture, installation and operation of the three-phase 500kV-467MVA standby transformer for Lai Chau and Son La Hydropower Plants

At the conference, the Chairman of EVN Duong Quang Thanh stated that the successful design, manufacture and installation of the first three-phase 500kV – 467MVA power transformer in Vietnam has helped save costs of importing foreign equipment, increase investment efficiency of projects and create a solid basis for the safe and stable operation of Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants. Besides, this is also a milestone marking the maturity of the domestic electrical equipment manufacturing industry and once again affirming the correct policy of the Government, ministries, agencies and EVN in supporting the development of electromechanical product manufacturing in Vietnam.

Chairman of EVN’s Board of Directors Duong Quang Thanh awarded the EVN's Certificates of Merit to individuals with excellent achievements in manufacturing, installing and operating the three-phase 500kV-467MVA standby transformer for Lai Chau and Son La Hydropower Plants.

The successful manufacture of the first 500kV - 467MVA power transformer by EEMC in Vietnam is an important step for this enterprise to keep on researching and developing new products and make its determination to succeed in designing and manufacturing 500kV - 900MVA transformers. Currently, EEMC has been assigned a state-level science and technology task by the Ministry of Science and Technology to design and manufacture 500kV - 900MVA power transformers. This product line is decisive for the safe and uninterrupted transmission of electricity on the North-South 500kV power system.
