Attending the Workshop, there were Mr. Ngo Son Hai – Deputy General Director and representatives of functional departments of EVN, power engineering consulting companies, and hydropower plants.
WB’s experts presenting reports on sedimentation in hydropower reservoirs
rom the World Bank, Mr. Franz Gerner – Energy Sector Coordinator for Vietnam and a lot of hydropower experts attended the Workshop.
The purposes of the Workshop are to introduce technical solutions as well as international experiences on sedimentation problems in hydropower reservoirs in order to enhance operation efficiency of hydropower plants, extend lifetime of hydropower plants and deal with environmental concerns.
Speaking at the Workshop, EVN Deputy General Director, Mr. Ngo Son Hai, addressed that In Vietnam currently there are 81 hydropower plants with a capacity of more than 30 MW, totaling 16,000 MW, accounting for 43% of the total installed capacity of the power system, of which there are reservoirs for 31 hydropower plants. As a result, the sedimentation control and management for hydropower plants in Vietnam is of great importance.
“Via the Workshop and information exchanges in the Workshop, hydropower units will gain more experience and solutions, thereby they could come up with proposals and ideas applicable for reservoir sedimentation control to enable plant operation more efficiently and better environmental management”, emphasized Mr. Ngo Son Hai.
Mr. Franz Gerner – Energy Sector Coordinator of the World Bank for Vietnam spoke that: “I assume that sedimentation problem of hydropower reservoirs is critical for Vietnam since the hydropower system of Vietnam is quite large in scale, to this end, sustainability should be taken into account, particularly in the current context of climate change. How to enhance mobilization of hydropower plants with the aim of declining reliance on fossil fuels should be considered. The information to be discussed at the Workshop would be very important for EVN to learn and work out solutions required for sustainable hydropower development”.
At the Workshop, the World Bank’s experts presented on such issues as climate change, sediment management and sustainable development; overview of sedimentation; sediment and transport models; sediment control at head works without water storage; guidance on models for reservoir sustainable management, etc.
