Vietnam Electricity (EVN), in coordination with the Japan Electric Power Information Center (JEPIC), recently organized a specialized workshop titled “Next-Generation Power Grid: Applications of Smart Maintenance, Digital Substations, and HVDC Transmission Technology.” The workshop took place over two days, from March 3–4 in Hanoi.

This year’s workshop focused on core technological trends shaping next-generation power grids. Representatives of EVN presented an overview and the current status of Vietnam’s power system. Experts from JEPIC, Kansai Transmission and Distribution Company, and Chubu Electric Power Grid Company shared their experiences in the development and operation of HVDC transmission technology, modern transmission infrastructure, data-driven smart maintenance applications, as well as digital substation solutions and initiatives implemented by Chubu Electric Power Grid.
According to Mr. Ta Tuan Anh – Deputy Head of the Technical and Safety Department of EVN, Vietnam’s power system is entering a new stage of development with increasingly high requirements for reliability, flexibility, and adaptability, especially as the system continues to expand and the share of renewable energy grows. The development of next-generation power grids has therefore become essential to enhance proactive control capabilities, enable real-time monitoring, prevent operational risks, and ensure national energy security.
Mr. Ta Tuan Anh also noted that the three technological pillars discussed at the workshop—HVDC transmission, smart maintenance, and digital substations—play a significant role in EVN’s roadmap for grid modernization and digital transformation.
During the workshop, experts actively exchanged views and responded to numerous questions from participants, clarifying practical issues related to the deployment of next-generation power grid technologies.
As part of the program, the JEPIC expert delegation also conducted a technical visit to Bac Ninh Power Company and Que Vo 110kV Substation to exchange experience in the operation of distribution networks.
This activity is part of the long-standing annual cooperation between EVN and JEPIC, which has been maintained continuously since 1998. Through 25 thematic workshops with nearly 120 Japanese experts participating, the two sides have exchanged many practical experiences in technology, operational management, system reliability improvement, and digital transformation in the power sector.
