Treating ash, slag from coal-fired thermal power plants: Effective ways

While many companies are looking for ways to treat ash, slag, Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company, Nghi Son Thermal Power Company found the effective solution for the treatment.

Turning risk into advantage

Annually, Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company has to treat about 1-1.5 million tons of ash, slag. Meanwhile, the reservoir’s capacity for storing slag of the Company can only operate in about 10 years. Therefore, from the starting operation of two plants (in 2011), Haiphong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company has determined that the ash, slag is a “critical” problem, with risk of seriously affecting the long-term operation of the Plant. If there is no solution provided, only by 2022, its two plants will face the risk of stopping operation because of lacking storing area for ash, slag.

However, Mr. Nguyen Thuong Quang, General Director of Hai Phong Thermal Joint Stock Company said that the risk from ash, slag was an old story. Over the past time, under the direction of the Government, the Ministry of Industry and Trade as well as the Group, the Company had accessed to the market consuming ash, slag as additives for cement, material for producing non-baked bricks, etc., had actively contacted with, facilitated the partners to purchase ash, slag of the two Plants. The Company did not lay too much emphasis on revenue form the materials, the price of ash, slag fluctuates only about VND 10,000 - 20,000/ton, giving the best condition for partners to maximally consume ash, slag.

Slag reservoir of Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company

The Company has issued an off-take contracting policy, considered selecting capable and enthusiastic partners, contractors who provide effective solutions for the reuse of ash, slag. Since 2014, the Company has signed contracts with four units purchasing most of the fly ash emissions. Particularly, in order to protect the environment, the Company has made strict requirements with partners for the collection and transportation of fly ash. All fly ash is transported from the plant to the consumption site by a closed-tank trucks, limiting to release into the environment.

With the bottom-furnace slag accounting for about 15% of the total amount of ash, slag discharged, the Company have contracted with partners for off-taking, using the materials for cement production or ground leveling and filling. As for the backlog slag previously left in the reservoir, the Company has cooperated with 2 units to exploit the materials as the auxiliary for cement factories. According to Mr. Nguyen Thuong Quang, if the current slag collection continues, by 2020, the above-mentioned reservoir of the two plants will be mainly left with water. The company also does not need to expand its slag storing capacity.

Do not leave ash, slag backlog

At Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant, the solution of thermal waste treatment, environmental protection is considered to be its strength. Mr. Nguyen Huu Thinh - Director of Nghi Son Thermal Power Company said that before the Plant’s operation (June 2013), the Company had sought and negotiated with the partners about the purchasing of all ash, slag. Thanks to this initiative, over the past 5 years, Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant had never faced risks or consequences caused by ash, slag backlog.

More than 320,000 tons of fly ash annually discharged from the Plant are purchased by partners. For the amount of slag more than 80,000 tons/year, partners have also purchased a part, and committed to consume all slag in the coming time. Currently, for unconsumed amount of slag, the Company has sprayed water on it, forming a mixture being unable to disperse dust into the environment and pump the mixture into the disposal site through a specialized, safe glass tube. Slag disposal sites are located far from residential areas, meeting the requirements of living environment.

Being aware of opportunities to consume ash, slag discharged, and actively cooperating with partners, flexibly implementing appropriate solutions to the situation of production and business, Hai Phong Thermal Joint Stock Company and Nghi Son Thermal Power Company have provided solutions to treat and effectively reuse the amount of ash, slag. This is the way referred, applied by many other thermal power plants to jointly protect the environment, ensure the operation of thermal power plants in the direction of efficiency and sustainability.
