On the morning of May 14 in Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, President and CEO of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), hosted and held talks with Mr. Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, President and CEO of Malaysia’s national utility company, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

During the meeting, the TNB leader provided an overview of domestic operations and outlined strategic orientations for the coming years. TNB aims to reduce its emissions intensity by 35% by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve these goals, the company has prioritized two main pillars: digitizing operations and decarbonizing the entire power generation process.

Malaysia is currently implementing a 1,000MW central solar power project and a 2,500MW floating solar project. Meanwhile, coal-fired power plants are gradually transitioning to natural gas to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

At the regional level, the TNB President and CEO expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation with power utilities across ASEAN to jointly develop clean energy sources, apply environmentally friendly technologies, and establish interconnected transmission networks, including land and submarine links between Malaysia and Vietnam.

Speaking at the meeting, EVN President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan emphasized the similarities between the two organizations in terms of functions, operational scope, and shared challenges. Vietnam’s national power system currently has a total installed capacity of around 84,000MW, with EVN accounting for approximately 38.5%.

Given the Vietnamese Government’s goal of achieving double-digit GDP growth in the 2026–2030 period, electricity demand is expected to surge, presenting urgent tasks for EVN to ensure a stable and reliable power supply, particularly amid the rapid development of renewable energy.

To integrate increasingly decentralized energy sources, EVN is steadily investing in a more synchronized and modern power transmission infrastructure. EVN is also currently engaged in cross-border electricity trading with Cambodia, Laos, and China.

The EVN leader affirmed strong alignment with TNB’s vision for deepening bilateral cooperation through experience sharing and mutual support in delivering national energy goals. EVN expressed hope that following this meeting, both sides will continue with in-depth technical exchanges, moving toward the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to maximize each side’s potential and contribute to the sustainable development of the power sector in both Vietnam and Malaysia, as well as the wider ASEAN region.
