Energizing capacity upgrade of Pho Noi 500kV Substation to 1,800MVA

The upgraded Pho Noi 500kV Substation will contribute to improving the reliability of power supply for Hung Yen Province, the southeastern area of Hanoi, and neighboring localities, starting from this year's dry season.

On the morning of 25 March 2026, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), the Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB), in coordination with the National Power System Operation and Electricity Market Company Limited (NSMO) and other relevant units, successfully energized the Pho Noi 500kV Substation Power Upgrade Project.

This is a special-grade, Group B energy project, with EVNNPT as the investor, NPTPMB acting on behalf of the investor in project management and execution, and Power Transmission Company No. 1 responsible for operation. The project is being implemented within the existing substation in Dai Dong Commune, Hung Yen Province.

The Pho Noi 500kV substation plays a particularly important role in supplying power to Hung Yen province, the southeastern area of Hanoi, and neighboring provinces. Before the capacity upgrade, the substation frequently operated at over 90% load, sometimes reaching 97%, posing a risk of overload during peak hot weather. As of March 23, 2026, the work had been completed and approved for energization by the investor’s acceptance council, and was officially commissioned on March 25, 2026, ahead of the schedule set by EVNNPT (originally planned for Q2 2026).

The project involves the installation of one new 500kV-900MVA transformer (AT5) and the conversion of the 500kV-600MVA AT1 transformer to backup mode. This increases the total substation capacity from 1,500MVA to 1,800MVA. Simultaneously, the project completes the 500kV and 220kV bays, busbar system, and other synchronized technical items to suit the new operating scale.

Construction began on November 20, 2025, with units working continuously in three shifts and four teams. As of March 23, 2026, the work had been completed and approved for energization by the investor’s acceptance council, and was officially commissioned on March 25, 2026, ahead of the schedule set by EVNNPT (originally planned for Q2 2026).
