Safe electricity use during storm season: “Golden rules” you should never ignore

As Vietnam enters the peak of the storm season, the risk of electrical accidents increases significantly due to flooding, fallen trees, lightning strikes, and household electrical system failures or leaks. To prevent accidents and protect lives and property, the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) advises every household and individual to pay special attention to safe electricity practices.

During storms and heavy rains, several common electrical risks can occur, such as: Power lines breaking and falling to the ground or into flooded areas, posing a deadly electrocution hazard upon contact; Household electrical equipment becoming damp or leaking electricity, leading to fire or electric shock; Flooding in residential areas increasing the risk of contact with stray electrical currents; Electrical leaks in household wiring systems; Climbing on rooftops or temporary shelters to fix leaks during rainfall, which can result in electrical accidents.

To ensure safety, EVNSPC advises households to: Immediately switch off circuit breakers or main power switches when water begins to enter the house or if electrical equipment becomes damp; Avoid touching sockets, switches, or appliances with wet hands; Install residual current devices (RCDs) for household electrical circuits; Unplug unnecessary electrical devices during thunderstorms to prevent lightning-related damage.

Especially, regular inspection and maintenance of household electrical systems are also essential to ensure safety. EVNSPC strongly advises residents not to attempt electrical repairs or installations without proper expertise. When it rains, people should avoid standing near substations, power poles, or large trees close to power lines, and keep a safe distance from fallen or low-hanging power cables, especially those in contact with water.

For residents in eight southern provinces and cities - An Giang, Ca Mau, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Dong Nai, Lam Dong, and Tay Ninh -any electrical incident should be reported immediately to the local power utility or through EVNSPC’s 24/7 Customer Service Hotlines: 19001006 – 19009000.
