Successful synchronization of Unit No. 2 – Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project
14:35, 14/11/2025
At 16:20 on November 14, 2025, Unit No. 2 (H10) of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project was successfully synchronized with the national power grid. Earlier, at 11:12 the same day, AT2 (T10) transformer and the 500kV GIS substation (within the scope of Unit No. 2) were also successfully energized for commissioning.
The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project (total capacity of 480MW) is invested by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with Power Project Management Board No. 1 (EVNPMB1) acting as the investor’s representative. To ensure project completion and inauguration on schedule, EVNPMB1 has closely coordinated with contractors to supply and install equipment, perform tests and calibrations, and conduct trial operations, achieving grid synchronization for Unit No. 2 (H10). This included: successfully installing the rotor on October 7, 2025, energizing AT2 (T10) transformer, and completing testing and calibration tasks.
Previously, Unit No. 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project generated power and successfully synchronized to the national grid on August 19, 2025, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in accordance with the Prime Minister’s directives. The successful synchronization of Unit No. 2, which is moving toward full project completion in 2025, is a significant achievement to commemorate the 14th National Party Congress.
The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion project is located on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh dam. The power plant is located in Hoa Binh Ward, while the water intake and approach channel are in Thong Nhat Ward, Phu Tho Province. The expanded plant shares the reservoir, dam, and spillway of the current Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant. New construction items include: the intake channel, water intake, water tunnel, and powerhouse.
Once operational, the expanded Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant will enhance peak power generation capacity for the national grid, creating conditions to maximize the use of surplus water discharged annually during the flood season from the existing Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant for electricity production. At the same time, improve the system’s frequency regulation and stability; contribute to reducing overall system costs; decrease the operating intensity of existing turbine units, thereby extending equipment lifespan and reducing maintenance and repair expenses.
