Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project is following up the progress

According to Power Project Management Board No. 3, after 8 months of commencement of the outlet cluster of Bac Ai pumped-storage project, the project is now following up the set progress.

Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project is on the list of power source projects approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 428/QD-TTg dated 18 March 2016 approving the adjusted Power  Development Plan, for the period 2011 - 2020 with a vision to 2030 (adjusted Power Master Plan VII).

The project plays the role of capacity reserve, backup for fault and system frequency regulation, of great importance to the national electricity system. The main task of the project is to cover the peak load curve of the system, contributing to reducing the difference (flattening) the load profile by mobilizing pump capacity at off-peak hours and power generation at peak hours.

Construction of discharge tunnel, section 3 - Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower plant

Mr. Luu Cong Hung, Head of Engineering - Safety Department (Power Project Management Board No. 3 – PMU 3), said: Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project uses modern technology equipment integrated pump - reversal turbine and engine - reversal generator in the world. The project uses the water source from Song Cai reservoir belonging to Tan My Irrigation system as the lower reservoir. Water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper one to generate power through two parallel tunnels with diameters ranging from 5.5m to 7.5m, with a total length of each tunnel of more than 2,700m.

The project is divided into two phases of investment. Phase 1 - building a cluster of outlet works in the lower reservoir area approved by EVN in Decision No. 398/QD-EVN dated 9 October 2019. The work has been in progress since January 2020, currently the contractor is focusing on construction to meet the required  schedule, ensuring completion before filling up the water of Song Cai reservoir in early April 2021.

Phase 2 - the remaining main work items and synchronous works. Currently, the survey has been basically completed to establish the technical design of phase 2. In addition, under the direction of EVN related to the conversion of forest land use purposes for developing pumped-storage hydropower projects. Bac Ai, PMB in coordination with the design consultant has calculated and proposed the design of the total ground area to optimize the land use area for the project while still ensuring technical and economic requirements and safety of the work.

Power PMB 3 plans to complete phase 2 technical design documents and submit them to EVN for consideration in April 2021.

Construction of the discharge  tunnel gate of Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project

Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project:

- Investor: Vietnam Electricity;

- Investor's representative: Power Project Management Board 3;

- Construction site: Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province;

- Scale: Capacity 1,200MW (300MW x 4 units);

- Total investment: More than VND 21 trillion;

- Main work item: Starting in quarter I / 2022;

- Completion of the entire project: In 2029.
