EVN leaders attend the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2020

ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2020 (within the framework of the 38th ASEAN Energy Ministers Meeting) takes place online, connecting to government agencies and major energy enterprises in countries within ASEAN. General Director of EVN Tran Dinh Nhan was one of the key speakers at the meeting on 18 November 2020.

General Director of EVN Tran Dinh Nhan introduced an overview of EVN and Vietnam's power system. The total installed capacity of the Vietnam power system in 2020 is 59GW. EVN is playing a major role in ensuring power supply to the country, accounting for about 50% of installed capacity in the total power capacity of the country.

In the period 2010-2019, the average annual power growth rates in Vietnam is 9.7%. In 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, electricity consumption is estimated at about 218 billion kWh, an increase of 3% compared to 2019. In the period 2021-2030, the electricity growth rate is expected to be about 8 % /year.

At the forum, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan spent a lot of time sharing solutions on Vietnam's Power sector to achieve the Government's emission reduction target. Specifically, EVN's coal-fired power plants have ensured environmental protection in accordance with environmental laws, and invested in advanced technologies in waste treatment.

Renewable energy is encouraged and facilitated by the Government of Vietnam, including: small hydropower, biomass energy, wind power and especially solar power. However, development of renewable energy also causes certain challenges in the operation of the power system. At the same time, General Director of EVN Tran Dinh Nhan also informed delegates from other countries about the Power Development Master Plan VIII project, with a number of orientations to achieve the goal of sustainable and environmentally friendly development of the power industry, and ensure economic efficiency.
